Re: Calling Snapperbait....

Ndemge.. It holds up pretty good for what it is... It's a bit soft and easier to chip than some other paints, but for a fishing boat thats going to get some scraches and dings, it's fine...

Have two boats painted with it, and have plans to paint my 19' mako with the stuff.. Painted (sprayed) my 15' flats boat, top and bottom, with it back in late 98'.. If i had taken better care of it, like wax it once in a while, the thing would probably look like the day it was finished... Still, It don't look bad...

Sprayed the 21footer, above the waterline, with rustoleum a little more than a year ago.. Three coats, wet sanded it out, buffed it with 3M heavy duty, waxed it, smooth as a babys butt...

My favorite thing to hear is, "paint looks nice, what is that? Awlgrip?".... Nope!... :D

If you will add a little hardner to the paint it will give it a better shell

I have a silly question. I am restoring a '67 Silverline runabout. All of the 'topside' paints are not to be used below the waterline... What do you use for the sides/bottom of the hull? I trailer my boats and they never spend more that 2-3 days in the water so marine growth/slime isnt a problem. Thanks...Doug

In that case, you won't need a bottom paint. Bottom paints are for boats that stay in the dock their whole life and have the problem of aquatic groth on them. For a trailer boat, pretty much any good quality automotive, or exterior grade paint will work.

Nobody I'd trust.

You'll do a better job on it than almost any shop. Check up & down here for the thread about the guy that did the 'roll & tip' on a pretty big fiberglass hull. Its a simple process that comes out well with a little practice if ya can't pull off spraying it.

By the way,, "Twidgit" is sort of a majic word in certain circles, especially those frequented by Brown Shoed Chain Greasers. How'd you come by it?

There's several ways to do it and have it come out OK. I'd wet sand it with 3M's 320 grit wet or dry paper, maybe even with a little bit of cheap dishwashing or laundry soap. The soap will clean most oils, air polution type crud that's fell on it, and help wash away the sanding slag a little better. Don't use any with a bunch of lotion or perfume in it, they could contaminate the job and cause a fisheye problem.

You want to scuff it to break any remaining gloss and clean it real well. The paint will stick better in the tiny scratches left by the sandpaper than it will to a slick surface--- sort of like a cat hanging on a screen door.

Using a coarser sandpaper, the work will go faster, but don't use one so rough that you'd see the scratch lines through the new paint.

Re: Calling Snapperbait....

Good prep is the key.. Definately sand before ya paint.. scuff it up good with 220-320 sandpaper.. Clean, clean, clean... I like acetone on a rag for starters, then finish up with a tac rag/cloth...

Wet/hose down the area first to keep the dust down, then, Squirt some paint.. Keep in mind, rustoleum is slooow drying..

I don't know how well dark colors will do, as i've only used light paint colors (white, almond, and a light mint green i mixed up)..

Light wet sanding can, and probably should, be done between coats, 1000 grit.... If you plan to wet sand and buff after the last coat, go with at least three coats of paint... Don't be afraid to thin the paint, and definately wait at least 24 hours between coats before doing anything... Take your time...

To wet sand the final coat, start with 1500 grit wet/dry paper, 1000-1200 grit only if it's really orange peeled bad.. Little soap in the water is good for wet sanding... Your just wanting to flatten out any orange peel a little before you buff...

Carefully machine buff with 3M heavy duty compound (you can easily burn thru the paint), wax the beast, and go boating...

Now where's Bubba on that hardner info???? ;) Oh Bubba!!!! :)

Re: Calling Snapperbait....

You can get some stuff from your auto paint dealer that is called fish eye eliminator fir the Orange peel effect.
If you have a lowe's or TSC store near you go pick you up about 16 ounces of hardener for paint and don't put over 10 ounces to a gal. I usually mix about 21/2 ounces to a quart of paint right before I spray. Let it set for about 20 min so it will activate. Don't mix it all at one time and don't leave it in your paint gun over night It will be there permanently if you do.
Get you some enamel reducer to thin it with. I have painted everything from tricycles to farm tractors with rustolum this way and have had great results. If you have a down draft spray gun spray at around 50 to 60 lbs pressure. If you have the canister type spray at 45 to 50.
If I left anything out just yell out.
BTW to clean it for painting get you some stuff called paint prep this stuff is better then bubble gum at cleaning.
Like snapper said it takes awhile to dry so don't get in no hurry.
