Hello,

I've got my eye on an old 62 Whaler Nauset and I'm trying to figure out if it's worth buying or not. I've got a few threads going on this boat in different areas so I hope I'm not spamming.

The areas that worry me the most about the boat are where the anchor would be tied down. It looks pretty cracked and worn. This picture is from the outside of the boat looking into the bow. Should I be worried about this? Is it going to be hard to repair because of the shape (or other reasons) http://f2.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/joshsfinn/detail?.dir=/f024&.dnm=7824.jpg

Next, the bow eye looks like it's been replaced/added on to. Do I need to be worried about this? http://f2.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/joshsfinn/detail?.dir=/f024&.dnm=3b37.jpg

And last, the drain hole has some cracks around it. http://f2.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/joshsfinn/detail?.dir=/f024&.dnm=42a6.jpg

I know this boat needs a lot of work, but I'm looking for a project. I've never done any fiberglass work, but wouldn't mind learning. Is this too big of a job for a beginer?

Thanks!

Re: Old boat repair

jsfinn,
I can't answer your questions, but if you can fix it it is a really neat looking boat with incredible potential. Whalers are great boats.

Take a look at keltonkrew's whaler project, they can be brought back a long way.http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=26;t=001207

Good Luck

Man, that is one salty boat. I myself would not hesitate. I have wanted a Whaler for so long that I built my rig into a Whaler wannabe. The main thing I would be concerned with is if the foam is saturated. Put it in the water and see how it sets. It has minimal deadrise so it should sit fairly high in the water. You can also take it to a scale and weigh it. Get the weight, and find a Whaler forum or something and find out what a 62 Nauset fully rigged should weigh. If your boat weighs several hundred pounds more, the foam is soaked, and you will never, ever get the water out. If there is no water saturation of the foam, then everything else is cosmetic. You could refurb that boat and have a seriously salty Whaler to be proud of, especially with the cool wood center console. How does the engine run? Click my link below and enjoy, you won't have it as bad as I did. Good luck...

Re: Old boat repair

Well guys, you've talked me into it. If I can work a good deal with the owner, I think I'll try to fix up this old Whaler.

Jason - that's a great project you did. I hope you don't mind if I ask you for help in the future - you really made that old boat look great!

Hayhauler, thanks for the link to Kelton's project. With all these great resources, I just can't find a reason why I wouldn't be able to fix something.

Kelton, if you're reading this - great boat!

I'll be sure to post along the way with progress/problems.

Thanks again!

Josh

Looks like we don't have to tell you to take pictures. Tell us how it comes along. I think Whaler has one of the best, longest standing, reputations of any boat on the water. I hope you enjoy it.

Good luck with it, and remember that Boston Whalers are one of the few boats that appreciate with age. If you can get it at a reasonable price, spiff it up, you'll have a truely valuable boat. There are plenty of folks here besides myself who will be more than willing to help get that boat to the condition it should be. Its almost a crime it is in that condition to begin with, but that will be the only reason you will be able to get it cheap.

Re: Old boat repair

Well, it didn't work out for me this time. The owner wants more than I'm willing to spend on a boat that needs this much work done.

I came up with a list of everything the boat is going to need and how much it'll cost for me to do the work and subtracted that from what the owner wanted. This figure was about half of what he was asking but I figured it was worth a shot because the boat has been for sale for 6 or 8 months. I politely gave him my offer, which he refused saying that he has more fun than that while he's on the boat, only if he does only take it out a couple of times a year.

He's a nice guy. I think we'll probably stay in touch. I hope he invites me on his boat next time he goes out and I'll ask him to come bass fishing with me sometime.

Who knows .. maybe if the boat is still around in a few months, he'll change his mind.

I'm disappointed ... I was really excited about the Whaler. Oh well...
