air conditioner

I have a 22' four winns with a cuddy cabin. I am looking for a cheaper alternative to air condition other than the ones that drop in the hatch. I have two side by side doors on my cabin. I was thinking of taking one off and building a little wall with a window unit air conditioner in it and mount it where the door was. There would be plenty of room to use the other door. And my generator has enough power to run the a/c unit. The space is big enough to fit the window unit. What does everybody think about this idea? Has anybody tried it? Can anyone think of potential problems?

Re: air conditioner

Hey bill, I'd worry about the weight of the unit bouncing around, and don't know if ac unit could take all the shaking.A possible alternative might be one of the portable "in room" units they have out.I've never tried one,but you just plug it in and find a way to drain the water.I've seen them for under 400$

Jim

Bill21

We did the same thing you are thinking of to my son-in-laws RV and it worked out great. Just so you know. It was only a 7000 BTU unit or close to that, so it wasn't that heavy and didn't require much support. Cuzner has a good solution, too. I don't know how well they work, though. Of course, you will have to vent the exhaust air to the outside of the boat, but you probably know that.

You will also have to find a way to drain off the condensation.

Other than that, it should work OK.

i am only getting a 5000btu unit so it is pretty small. it will drip onto the deck of the boat and the boat is waterproof so i should be ok. i will probable but a bucket there to catch it.

Re: air conditioner

Most all new "window" units are designed to NOT DRIP unless the unit is mounted with too much outward tilt. The fan is designed to PU the water and splash or spray it onto the coil for additional effeciency.

Re: air conditioner

that works out even better, plus a small window unit cost 80 dollars at walmart compared to 800 for one that drops in the hatch
