Roto molded fuel tank modification?

Lets say a new roto-molded fuel tank by Temp or Moeller needs just a tad modification to fit in the space I want (under splashwell) can the tank be heated and re-shaped?

I'm thinking that if a corner protruded too far or maybe the fill neck needs to be leaned over a few degrees from vertical I might be able to heat and bend the tank rather than cut the boat.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Mark.

It should be doable with a heatgun, Just be patient and heat it slowly, to be sure it is warm enough to bend without cracking.

I think that roto-molded tanks are made from polyetheline(sp). You can weld it, so you could cut and modify fairly easily. Chief ;)

Howdy Hoo. Plastics is what I know, so perhaps I can help here. Chief is correct on material (polyethylene). Heating it up is a little awkward. If you overheat a specific spot on it too much, you can invoke material degradation, which will make a hardened spot that will crack (or dissentigrate). So with that NEVER use direct fire, flame, or high heat producing items that target areas (say like a heat shrinker).

An oven might be plenty ok for this (thats what we use in the R&D department to tweak and fiddle with concept prototypes). Be careful when done that you don't make any areas of material too thin, because whatever you do to shape the material, you will be stretching areas and therefore thinning them.

Also on the fill neck, be very careful not to warp the neck and threaded area. Will cause leaking if you can even get the cap threaded back on. Even if you leave the cap on to maintain shape, it can still warp, because the cap is thicker and usually it is injection molded, meaning different grade of material, which means it will react differently than the neck of the container.

Just some thoughts.

Wow! Thanks Roger! Nothing like experience from a pro. If I have to bend or dent the tank, I'll try to do it with a heat gun. Regarding the fill neck, it has a 1.5" rubber hose connect to it, not a cap. So hopefully any minor warping will not be a problem.

this thread is gonna be printed!
