Question about listed tank capacities

I calculate that a tank 18"x12"x16.25" contains 3510 cubic inches. Divide by 1728 to get cubic feet = 2.03125 cu/ft. My Conversion Table lists 1 cu/ft = 7.481 gallons. Multipy 2.03125 x 7.481 = 15.195 gallons. The tank is listed as a 14 gallon tank and lists no reserve. So I should assume that the last gallon is not accessable and keeps the siphon tube from sucking crud off the bottom of the tank?

And, at about $2 a gallon, on the initial fill, there is $2 worth of gas put in that I will never get out!

Sound right?

Aren't those measurements to the outside? Take of 1/8" all around and you're down to 14.4 gallons. Chamfer some corners and you're below that.

Mark, when you did the calculation, did you use inside dimentions or outside dimentions of the tank? Also, there is some reserve built in to the tank, but it won't be much on a tank this size.

Ok, you guys are right. I used outside dimensions. Thanks for putting me on the right track.

You are remarkably thorough, I would have checked the fit and taken their word for the capacity.

Re: Question about listed tank capacities

I started checking when a dealer told me a popular 18gal permanent tank I asked a price for actually holds only 15 gal. I checked the measurements and he was right. Seems all retailers list this tank as 18 because the spec is wrong.

So I started checking.

Diesel Tanks mounted on Trucks,+ Equipment Also have a "Headspace" built in for expansion,...
Don't know if that would figure in or not.....
