If you plan on using gel coat, try a small area first to see if you can get a good bond, most of the time you can't. Get a topside paint/primer combination that's designed to be applied over epxoy. I would hate to see you go through all of this work just to have the gel coat peel off of the epoxy next summer.

Re: GEL COAT over epoxy..

Luis, You can use polyester gelcoat (and resin) over epoxy, if you prepare the surface properly. To prepare the epoxy surface, you must sand it to remove the surface shine(and certain chemicals), and wipe it with acetone.

Awlgrip is a polyurethane paint, not a gelcoat.

You can usually add a non-slip substance (sand or other grip) to the paint to make it non-slip.

You should paint the epoxy to protect from UV light.

Re: GEL COAT over epoxy..

mmmmmmm just seen the reply saying NO to applying gelcoat to epoxy resin with glass matting,i applied gelcoat via a small roller to the whole inside of my 12ft clinker style hull after i had reinforced the hull with afew extra layers of glass and resin and i have never had a problem with it,the boat builders that supplied the gelcoat did not add any wax to the gelcoat as normaly they would.

I think you are just gonna hafta paint. You might get gel to stay on for a while, but not very long. Epoxy primer and a compatible paint would be a good choice...Chief ;)

Luis, if you can find a poly. manufacture that will tell you that their poylester will bond to epoxy and stay bonded in the sun go for it, if not we can debate it all day, I don't think you will find one willing to stick their neck out that far---Bob

And they are the ONLY people on the planet that say polyester will stick to epoxy. Everyone else in the business says not to do it. West also says not to use pressure treated wood but it has been in use for 20 yrs in production boats with ZERO problems.

Re: GEL COAT over epoxy..

I called West Systems to discuss this with them. They said they normally recommend paint and primer over the epoxy, but did the testing to show that it is possible to get a bond with gel coat. This was in lab conditions on small panels, we (I work for a resin and gel coat company) have done small test panels in the lab under ideal conditions and have not always been able to easily reproduce some of these results in the real world (not tests related to this issue). Polyesters are not good at bonding to most surfaces when compared to epoxy, they do bond well to other polyesters though.

Re: GEL COAT over epoxy..

ondarvr

I need your help!! I was give a gallon of epoxy, and I want to use it for some laminating work.
Brand is unknown, the ratio is 5 resin to 1 hardener. I want a "sloooow" setup for maximum penetration into the marine XL.
Are hardeners generic, like MEKP, or must the hardener match the resin brand.
Thanks!!

Re: GEL COAT over epoxy..

cc lancer

I work for a polyester resin company, so my advice on epoxy is not that well informed. Unless you can find out the brand and type of epoxy, it will be very hard to use it with good results.
Sorry, not much help.

cc I wouldn't be using 5-1 epoxy in marine applications. Chief ;)

Re: GEL COAT over epoxy..

Chief 101:
It came from a Company here in NC that is building a 60 foot wood yacht. The employees must sign a disclosure statement, before they can work there.
The shop foreman sold me the gallon and said any 5 to 1 hardener would work. But would not tell me the mfg. of the resin. So I was asking "ondavr" if
this was a fact.
<><><><><><><><><><><>><><><><><><><><><><><> <><>
Ondavr:
I have bought 100's of gallons of poly from composite one. But I have got caught up in the Epoxy is better syndrome. :D
I have had to stop buying the 55 gallon barrels because it would kick off before I used it all.
Is there any way to extend the life of poly resin?

Re: GEL COAT over epoxy..

I used 5:1 epoxy for "west" type sheathing a 42' cutter and 32' ketch. The downside I had with 5:1 is you have less margin of error when measuring each batch.

I have no idea if epoxy hardners are matched to the resin. I'm sure resin mfgs will tell you...and I wouldn't rely on info from anyone else unless you are willing to chance a weak link in your layup.

Re: GEL COAT over epoxy..

cc lancer

Yes there are ways to to extend the shelf life.

1. Pick a resin that has no DCPD in it, DCPD is very reactive and will get hard (not cured though)without catalyst if it is exposed to air or other things much sooner than other types. DCPD resins, and blends of it, are less expensive and have some very good properties, but shelf life is poor.

2. choose a longer gel time resin

3. keep it cool and sealed tight.

4. VE resins can be purchased unpromoted, this means no DMA or cobalt are added before you get it. You will need to add them when it is going to be used. VE resin is very expensive and better for most projects than most other types.

5. The Comp 1 rep should be able to get a resin that will last longer in the drum if he knows you want one.

What's the code on the resin you are currently using? I may be able to tell you what type it is.

Epoxy is very good stuff, but is overkill for many applications, thats why most products are made with polyesters. High stress, well engineered products that are not as price sensitive benifit from epoxy, carbon fiber, kevlar and other high end items, but most boats need to be affordable, so they aren't used.
Don't get me wrong epoxy is great stuff, my boats would be much lighter and stronger if they were made with epoxy, but then I woudn't have enough money to buy them.

Re: GEL COAT over epoxy..

Can't argue with that, I use a lot of poly resin but not much epoxy. The info I have came from West Systems quite a few years ago so it may not be current. This has turned out to be a very informative thread...Chief ;)

Re: GEL COAT over epoxy..

luisjg,

another member was good enough to post a test report from one of the independent boat test mags that showed plain old Rustoleum brand paint does as well as most of the expensive topside poly based paints. Hard to believe I know, but true.

In my Formula I painted the floor (which was glassed and gel coated) with topside paint and added non-skid last season. So far so good.

For short money you can buy rustoleum and their non-skid mix and give it a try.
