I want to temporarily remove my swim platform so that I can buff and wax the transom (pain the the butt with all the hardware in place).

What should I use on the screws/screwholes to make sure that it doesn't leak afterwards?

-JustMrWill

Re: Sealing Thru-transom Screws

Be aware that the 5200 is a permanent mounting adhesive/sealant. It is great if you never intend on removing the fastened parts again. The 4200 or 4000 will work just as well but are removeable grades. I doubted whether the 5200 was really permanent until I tried to remove the speedwheel from the transom 2 weeks ago. Removed the two screws and tried to pull off the bracket. No way. Ended up having to gently knock it off with a hammer. Took a piece of gelcoat right off the hull about 3/4" x 1 1/2" where the speedwheel was mounted. I was shocked  Got it all fixed up and remounted the hardware using 4200 instead. Also, don't overtighten the screws when reinstalling. That will force out all the sealant. Just tighten snug, let the sealant fully cure then tighten up completely for a waterproof seal.

My local dealer said they hate 5200. People use it to seal outboard motor through bolts, get it all over, then when the dealer tries to remove the o/b it won't come off the transom.

Just bought 4200 UV (I think...or was it 4000 UV)...whatever...looks like it will do the job on both my thru transom screws as well as the removable deck over my gas tank.

-JustMrWill

5200 is a good sealant,, but it is a permanent sealant,, if u want to take it apart, it's tough, if it is used properly, it is the best thing going....IMHO.......

Re: Sealing Thru-transom Screws

I have a question . I had some screw holes under the waterline of the transom . I applied some 5200 to the holes . How long do I have to wait to put my toy in the water ?

Read the container... the 4000 UV has a 24 hour cure time..the 5200 was longer but I don't remember what it was. (48hours??)

-JustMrWill

Actually I did read the container . This is a fast curing formulation --24 hours and my boat is in the water.

Does all of the above mean that I should not use 5200 to seal my Smart Tab screws??? Maybe go for something that is a little less tenacious?

Yeah-use 4200 or the stuff I'm using (it's hard to get 3m 42 or 5200 here)
It's called Pur-Flex Marine, says on the tube it's specially developed for the sealing requirements of the marine industry and unaffected by sea water-and remains permanently flexible.

There is also the Boat Life brand sealer called Life Seal. Seals well, but takes a few days to cure. Stays soft like silicone, but it is not silicone and is good for parts that you want to come apart some day.
