My 82 Sea Ray is now running great, all electronics work and it is time to bring the interior up to 2005. The overhead and hull sides are in 1980's carpet. Want to get rid of this and use perhaps wood paneling on the overhead, any sugestions on how to proceed? Also thinking of painting the cabinetry - the artificial teak appearance does not really add much class.

Re: update interior

I think a much more contemporary look for the ceiling is white vinyl or a color that goes with your upholstry. Thin wall panneling can be cut to shape, then roll on contact cement and apply the viny. If the area to cover is wider than the common 60" vinyl roll, you can sew a seam or do a butt joint with a thin piece of trim to cover the joint. The home centers have small trim in solid plastics that could work well there. Or cut a two inch wide strip of vinyl and cover with contact cement. Then fold the edges in on itself to make a piece of vinyl trim. This can be used to cover the butt joint.

BTW I saw stainless steel staples for the common Arrow staple gun at Lowes or Depot, can't remember which. They were not expensive.

Regarding the cabinetry, you can cover them with Formica. You have hundreds of colors to choose from and it's cheap... a 4x8 piece is only $37 at the Depot.
