i did the first coat of epoxy on both sides of the replacement wood for the transom ,,,,after they dried today i wet them down and scrubed them with a green scotchbrite..then wiped them off with a paper towel ,,,,,so 1 day to coat 1 side, 1 day to coat the other side let dry, 1 day to wash off excess amine blush and let dry [ as im not going to seal in the water i used to wash off the blush] 1 day for second coat 1 side ,1 day second coat other side ...1 day wash off amine blush from second coat....done ,,,,,this will have taken 6 days to do corectly although i could have recoated after 12 hours with no washing ,but im a working man,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,so 6 days to do correctly ,man how did my fiberglass place that was gunna do the work figure on 2 to 3 days for floor and transom ,,i got to wonder there is so many small things im doing in this project it is lucky to take a couple months...of drying and cutting ,fitting ,grinding ,waiting etc...............could i have used acetone which i think drys much faster than water as a cleaner of the amine ................also to any one who care to hear a rookies trial and error ,,,,when applying the first coat of epoxy lay it on real thick like a pool of water on cement or so ,,,i used a roller and went thin over most of it and i can feel the grain of the wood ,,,some parts neer the bottom transome drain hole area i left alot of epoxy on the wood and i dried real nice ...that is how im gunna do the second coat...

You must have some bad epoxy to get blush so fast. I was able to recoat up to three days before I needed to sand or wipe off anything.

once you got on a good first coat,, you can use water afterwards..

50/50 water/ammonia is the best blush remover there is.. ofcoarse lite stuffing first..

if'n your quick.. before 24 hours.. no blush problem should be had,, an a second coat right on top..

the closer to a 1 to 1 ratio the epoxy mix is ,, the less wax/blush there is ..

I'm curious, where are you guys getting 24hrs and 3 days is ok for coating without prep? Even WEST epoxy blushed when it kicked for me.

Hey Bill P (aka Epoxy GURU) isnt the West site that says you can coat up to 24hrs without sanding? Maybee becase the 1:1 West Epoxy takes longer to blush that generic 2:1?
Bigdad, its nice to be able to sand once and do all you layup work. I think you can plan around sanding blush over and over again but it depends on your project progression really. Measure twice/cut and dry fit/ wet it / stck it / fillet/ tape it :)
Milky white means it was not done "kicking" right? Bill?

im going to encapsulate all my transome and stringers and floor in epoxy first before fileting ....it will last longer i feel after tinkering i dont think you can get a good coat of epoxy on a vertical free standing board ,,,maybee a good fillet on a dry/wetted out joint ,,,,but i dont feel its verry easy to encapsulate a piece of your framework while it is vertical...

Re: amine blush cleaning after first coat..

thehermit,
Thanks for the compliment but I'm just a regular guy who has done a fair amount of glasswork. I'm no longer connected with the trade and only do home projects anymore. I don't use WEST any more so don't keep up with their advertising. I used WEST 2:1 and it had a notable blush within 30 minutes or so. On that job I used "skip-sand" liquid to tack the surface instead of sanding. Most times I just try to laminate all at once or sand but not having to sand for 24 hrs is a big deal to me. I'd like to learn about it but not too sure it's worth the high $$$ WEST charges. Sometimes the blush is hard to see and humidity makes it show more but I don't think kick time has as much to do with it as ingredients do...it's wax rising to the surface. Kick, Kicking, Kicked is just slang meaning the transition from liquid to hard. Everyone in the trade uses those words.

bigbad,
Glassing the transom is easy. You may get some resin draining down but nothing you can't control by hanging around with a brush. If you use a slow cure it may take awhile before you can leave though.
