Greetings. I have a 1991 Bayliner Capri 20 footer with two soft spots on the floor. This boat has carpeting that appears to be glued down. Any ideas for loosening this adhesive so repairs can be made ??? or repair floor and re-carpet?? THANKS KEEP IT ON THE WATER

Re: Rotten floor repair

That's the kind of repair that gets bigger once you're in there. When you've taken it apart you'll likely find other work that needs to be done. I doubt you'll be able to just patch a place or two and replace the carpet - more likely you'll have to replace the entire floor making new carpet or other floor covering necessary. If you're in luck you won't have rotten stringers beneath the floor etc. There are tons of posts on the topic, some with photos so you'll have some idea what you're getting into before you get started.

I started a post yesterday looking for information on flooring materials that won't deteriorate over time (among other things). I'm hoping to refloor my boat just once, but I don't know what materials are suitable when considering weight and expense. With maintenance free "lumber" available I think there must be something better to use than plywood.

Good luck with it.

i replaced with marine grade plywood.
wet out the boards sealed with poly and plan on glassing the deck with poxy . id say if done right it will last longer than the boat
i still have yet to read anyone using composite decking or other materials

Re: Rotten floor repair

also i looked at my foam wich did not apear to be rotted or wet but i dug in a bit anyway it was completely water logged and all the glass underneath was cracked. so make sure you dig until your positive there is no moisture or you will just be going at it again soon.
we used 2 part foam to replace factory foam theres a post in the forums about it worked great

Re: Rotten floor repair

I just repaired a whole bunch of flooring in an 1988 bayliner 2150(21.5ft). All the carpet in that boat just pulled right up. Bayliner uses some pretty poor adhesive. I have to agree with Terry, the project gets a lot bigger. Use a respirator and a long sleeve shirt with a face mask for cutting the wood from the fiberglass. I used a grinder with a metal cutting wheel and it went through it like butter. The only thing is you should know how to fiberglass pretty well if you do it this way and be careful not to damage the hull on the edges. Good luck

Re: Rotten floor repair

THANKS FOR ALL THE ANSWERS!! It looks like just two small areas eg. 10" square, and hopefully the adhesive is as crappy as you guys think. I was hoping to route out the bad spots and drop new marine plywood in size for size with glass to help stiffen it up. The rest of the boat is absolutely mint and transom is solid.

Thanks for replies! Brine
