carpet to herculiner

I have an older boat (Somerset) 75 model 225/188. Currently it has carpet which was layed down with appears to be plain old carpet glue. I fish and needless to say, the carpet isnt easy to clean. I realize I can pull the carpet, scrape off the glue then gelcoat with sand for texture. I was wondering if there was a better and easier way to solve this problem. What about white herculiner, the stuff they use in truck beds? tx

Herculiner has been used like this with much apparent success for some time now.

Evercoat No-skid is cheaper, works better, and can be found in whatever color. It is intended specifically for the marine environment, $40-ish a gallon, and I have three seasons on my boat with no fading, flaking, chipping, or any of it. Leave the truck stuff in the truck, as someone said in another post. Good luck....

Toottoot, I think the herculiner only comes in black. I used the Herculiner stuff in my truck bed and was not impressed. The sun actually faded and attacked the surface. I bought a different brand(Duplicolor) and put it on top of the herculiner and have not had any problems since. <br /><br />That being said I don't think I would want any type of bed liner for my boat floor. I would be afraid that something similar would happen and I would have to do the work twice. I am not a fan of carpet, but there are other alternatives to boat flooring. For example: Nautolex vinyl, Polyurethane non-skid coatings, Epoxy non-skid coatings. <br /><br />I was planning on replacing my boat carpet with the Interlux non-skid stuff. Good luck in your quest.

tr918. Thanks for the info. I had to redo the transom and used epoxy. I loved not only working with it but it actually stuck to the old fiberglass resin better than the new fiberglass resin that is available today. I do alot of diving and I think I might entertain the epoxy non shik as it might be tougher and last longer. The carpet was put down with glue so the worst part will be the scraping. Have any idea who sells the epoxy non-skid in off white?

Jasonj, Hey Thanks for the info. I work at Rucker. I was wondering on the evercoat, do you know if the grey color it comes in can be made off white with the addition of white pigment. I know pigments can be added but seeing that you have applied the grey if you think white pigment will change it enough. I need something tough, scuba tanks, throwing lobster and sharks in the boat etc. ha ha..Whats the prep, just down to the glass, clean with acetone and roll?

Toot, I honestly am not sure about how the pigmenting may work, as grey was what I was looking for. As far as prep, I sanded everything with a power sander and aggressive grit paper (under 100 grit if I remember rightly), then whiped everything down with acetone. I applied it with a large brush so I could make a pattern in it. 1 gallon gave me two coats in my boat, you want at least two coats. I have been very happy with it so far.

I used the interlux non-skid in my jon boat and love it. I also brushed it on but I have heard of people rolling it. I have used it for three seasons now without a scratch. It has taken ancors, tackle boxes and coolers bounceing around, general foot trafic and a now 3yr old beating on it with everthing from hot wheels to loose wrenches so I would say it is some good stuff.<br /><br />Mike M.

I used the evercoat and it worked great. A little tough to apply but you get the hang of it after a bit. Directions on can say you can make it nearly white by adding a bit of high quality exterior latex paint. After a full season of use I am well pleased with it and would use it again.
