Hey all, i'm new here, so i hope this forums will be a pleasant opportunity for me to learn more about DIY boat fixing. I have bought a 21 Bernico skirace boat which had trouble cornering at fast speeds (it went straight into a concrete wall during a lap-race  ) and sunk. So everything was wet, and about 1m² of hullmaterial was missing after the crash. problem is not fixing it, but where it needed to be fixed. I have posted a few pics of it now, but you can clearly see where and how severe it was. I think this is about the most troublesome place to miss some hull.

Now for the repair i used epoxy, carbon fibre and roven mat. It's pretty solid but i have doubts it will take the hammering of pretty high speeds, rough water and a merc 2.5 280 attached to it. What is your thought about this?? Will it be about as strong as it was before.. or no will it just be strong enough? There went about 10 liters of epoxy in the repair, 20 layers of glass. around 1 cm thick all layed up wet in wet. Thank you,

cheers

Sam

As long as the damaged area was removed champfered and cleaned up properly before it was patched it should be as strong as the original bottom

WOW.. !! THAT MUST OF BEEN DRAMATIC..!!

carbon fiber is WAAAAY strong stuff..!!

applied lenghtwise of hull..

should overlap the repair to soild hull by atleast 6 inches, all around..

sounds like you done good..

SAM,, they got a neet invention.. a steering wheel,DOH.. ( simpsons ).. :)

your english is great..

US army uses porno to teach recuits that couldn't read.. The above representation didn't come out as planned.

What I tried to show is that the first layer should have covered the edge area of the hole.
The next layer should have overlapped the first layer.
And all the following layers, the same.
Let's see if I can do it again.
The bottom line being the first repair layer.

_________________
____________
_______

Yes, this is how it was done. But because of the many (undesired) angles it was pretty hard to overlay every sheet of glass and carbon fibre exactly the same way (and into every crack and corner because of the lack of flexibility). But i do understand your advice Petty Officer, Wave. Professionals told me the trick too. It adds massive bonding strength according to them, but it makes sense.

:D YES CAPTAIN CRAB B, i guess i found the steering wheel by now (if its round and MISSING). However it wasnt me who wrecked it, but i dont mind. I bought it cheap because it didnt float. Otherwise these hulls are pretty expensive and i have to pay my monthly adult channel fees too you know. Thank you for the warm welcome. :)

We tested the strength of the repair, as you can see with the metal chackle (dont know the word). We roped it behind a jeep and pulled it 30 or more feet over mudd, grass and bumps (because i still need to find a decent trailer). It didn't rupture nor made a sound so i guess you guys are right. It will be ok, if not i'll let you know a very funny, wet and expensive story very very soon! :)

Thank you for the responses. You guys seem to be a lot of fun. Don't mind my name though, got better taste.

By the way. If for some reason i did make a submarine, how can i save the engine after fishing it out of the water afterward
