How can I get more speed?

I have a 14' Monark v-hull boat with a 9.5 horsepower Johnson Seahorse motor on the transom. She weighs roughly around 500 pounds and was wondering if I could get anymore speed out of this boat. Besides changing props, and going up to a bigger motor is there anyway I could get more speed? Doesn't do to bad for the use it gets, just courious if she can run any faster.

How much speed do you have now, Thompy?

Where is your anti-ventilation plate compared to the bottom?

What prop is on your engine?

Do you have a hydrafoil or Smart Tabs?

Do you have a tach? What rpm at WOT?

Let us know. :)

Hmmm...9.5 HP this must be one of the OLD low profile little ponies. Not much you can do to them...they were maxed out for thier dispalcement pretty much. Jack up the motor so that the cavitation plate is 1" above tranny bottom, good tune up and run some "Power Tune" thru it. Make sure the boat bottom is straight and cavitation plate is PARALLEL to the keel or bottom. Check prop for condition, these little engines are sensitve to worn out or bent props. ADJUST PLANING ANGLE BY MOVING WEIGHT AROUND IN THE BOAT, not trimming the motor away from parallel caitation plate setting. AND GET RID OF THAT HYDROFOIL IF YA GOT ONE!!!! These adjustments will give you the best speed, UNLESS, you have a situation where moving weight around can't fix things (..like a really big "BOB" in the boat...) ;)

If you had one ot the mid 70s 9.9s you could kick it to a 15 by changing the carb.

The only way you are going to get that set up to go faster is to floor it and jump out.
Just kidding.
Good tune up and a clean (no damage) prop for the money is the best bet.

Re: How can I get more speed?

Well right now I don't have a Tach, but the way it sounds its running within the recomended specs. It "whines" out a little more with just me in the boat, yet the RPM's drop just a little with another person in it. As for hydrofoils and smart tabs... NO I don't have any, and was wondering what would be the best way to go. I'll try moving the motor up on the transom to see if that helps with drag. As for moving weight around I've tried that and just can't find the right place for all the weight, the stern wants to squat every time. Its the standard prop 8 1/8" x 8 pitch and not bent or worn out. Should I go to a higher pitch maybe? Any suggestions would be great.... Thanks

8" pitch is already pretty low. A 500 lb boat is a lot for a 9.5. Your boat could probably handle a 30 hp ...

The boat should do about 18 to 19 MPH. depending in hull design. The best thing for getting it on plane and maximizing top end would be the Smart Tabs ST780-20. at under $99. The hydrofoil may help to get on plane but may also reduce top speed. They are about $25.

I'd say in that boat 18-19 MPH is overly optimistic. I've got a "65" turtle on a narrow 12 footer that is probably 350 lbs loaded and get 21 MPH (GPS) on calm water.

Speed costs money.
How fast do you want to go?
