I have been needing to repaint the engine cover in my old 1987 Merc 150 as it was a bit fadded and had some rub throughs from trailering with the cover on.

Well, last week I had some other small peices at work that needed to be painted black so I decided to stay late one night and get the covers ready to paint along with the rest. The other parts needed to be a semi gloss, so I painted all the parts including the engine cover and then I urethane clear coated the engine cover.

 OMG, The two halves look sooooo perfect and glossy. I took all the decals off and had the local graphics place make new ones. They should be done next week. I will post picks durring and after. Engine covers look just so so when new, these look like a new black Corvette!!! Needless to say, Im excited!!!!

Nice Job Bassin' Fever.
I would be interested in your local graphics guy as I'm getting ready to do my 81 2.4 claim shell. What pattern did you provide him and what was the cost?
Maybe I could just order from him as mine look's identical to yours.

Dave M.
Southern Cal

I took the engine cover into the sign shop and told them that all I wanted was the Mercury lettering. The original lettering was the same lenth and all, but 1/4" squatier. I had them make the lettering taller. $15.00 for the lettering for both sides. Probably .25 cents worth of Vinyl. The rest is just the old style automotive rolls of pin stripe tape. The grey stripes are a very sparkly tape, you cant see it in the pictures. I pretty much just made up the stripes.

Its hard to beleive how much nicer the boat looks, I mean, the cover wasnt really bad to start with, I mean, it was acceptable. But it looks like a new boat now. Now if only the trailer looked that good.

WOW!! Nice job...Double nice job!
I like the idea of semi gloss with clearcoat. That makes the finished product "look" softer.
Gloss black isn't gloss black. Not talking about the physical aspects of the finish, I strictly mean the "appearance". Some colors look "hard", and some look "soft".
Using a duller finish with clearcoat especially with black will get you a soft appearance that stays looking "wet".
It's really cool.
Nice job again...New painted motor covers and other smaller details are that last bit that will MAKE the rest of the boat glow.
Seems to Make one run better also...lol. Not sure why?

I hope you have another boat though.
Best I can tell, a few days off of the lake for you might lead to some type of substance withdrawal symptoms. (fishing/water addiction withdrawals?)

The worst part was removing the old decals. They were a very cheap decal, actually seemed like they were partly paper but they were actually a vinyl of sorts. Old and very brittle. a lot like taking the label off a pill bottle. A whole lot of fingernail work involved.

Looks great LD!

What kinda paints did you use? How do you know if you have compatibility issues with the semi gloss and clear urethane? How long between coats of black and clear? Were any of them automotive paints?

I like that racy little ***oil decal. The iboats one ought to get you a hat or something. :p
