Need to treat the mahagony transom supports on aluminum boat. I've been told linseed oil works well, but I don't know the difference in boiled and raw. Any insight.

Raw Linseed takes forever to dry. I'm not sure that it affords any better durability over the boiled.

Boiled linseed oil has chemicals added to aid in the drying process, raw linseed oil takes ages to dry.

Make a 50/50 mix of boiled linseed and turps, the turps will help with penetration, otherwise, boiled linseed oil can skin if it dries to fast.

Nope, turps won't help penetration, but it will lower the viscosity and make it easier to spread. But you need twice as many coats to get the same coverage (build).

Penetration is a function of molecule size. Turps just moves the molecules apart, it doesn't shrink them.

Boiled Linseed Oil (BLO) is raw linseed oil with driers added that allow it to film in a reasonable amount of time. It doesn't provide any better or worse protection than raw linseed oil. But raw linseed oil will take forever to dry as has been pointed out.

But neither should be used on an exposed surface on a boat without a top coat of some kind. Mildew likes feeding on linseed oil and without protection, areas that have been oiled may go black. Oil by itself offers little to no protection from moisture either, and none at all to any long term exposure to water.

But if you want to "pop" the grain in wood, and if you want wood to glow, and if you're willing to put a top coat over the oil, there's nothing better faster or cheaper than BLO.

Good luck
Nikko

Have you tried turps? It does help with penetration, and it doesn't make you use 'twice as much'.

BoatBuoy, I recently finished 600 some board feet of Mahogany on the new boat. I used WATCO's available at H.Depot, some people said good and some said bad. I followed the instructions and it came out beautiful. Sanded with 120 and then applied two coats.

Thad

Thad,
Transom.
I clipped a piece of another pic and lightened it. It's not very good, but shows the wood portion of the transom. Didn't yours have it?
