Hi all, this is my first post here at iboats. I purchased my first boat around 9 months ago. And it has been very reliable since! I keep it in a wet slip at a local marina. Took over the previous owners due to not having a trailer included. Since I just finished my captains course and just need to send in the app to the USCG for my six-pack license. Alright let’s get to it.

I took my lady friend out at about midnight few nights ago. Leaving the marina we were headed to Bird Island about 20 min away. Less than 5 min away from the destination boaters worst fear happened. I was dead on the water.

I have a 2006 Sea Ray 185 Sport, 3.0L Mercruiser with an Alpha I drive. First starting her in the slip it was running a little rough as in some vibrations but that cleared right up when leaving. It being at night I kept her right around 15 mph the whole voyage. I’m in the middle of the channel and I lost all headway. It seemed almost like a ran aground but without the impact feel. Like I said I was in the middle of the channel so that wasn’t a possibility. My next thought was I must have had something wrapped around the prop or something. Immediately I put her in neutral and not soon after the engine died. I trimmed all the way and checked the prop from the swim platform and it was clear and spun freely. I tried starting her and it wouldn’t take, at first took me a few tries. The motor sounded strong and was trying. I then did get her to turn over. Put it in gear slightly had some propulsion but an odd almost grinding noise if that could explain it. I then didn’t want to damage anything further so I called for a tow especially since it was covered by my progressive sign and glide.

After doing some googling I am hoping it is a spun prop but did not increase rpms to see if it was “slipping.” Just hoping it is not something more… Maybe even something with the gears in the upper or lower? I am mechanically inclined, working on cars and what not. I also have been doing my own maintenance on the boat. Don’t know if I should get it checked out by a mechanic but do want to save that cash and try on my own.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance and I’m excited to be a new member!!

Wish you didn't say anything about getting your six pack

If you had not said anything about the six pack the following would not have been typed:

Number one thing about being a Cap, you need to know your vessel is in proper working order. You bought a boat and did not do any maintenance to assure it was sea worthy. Fire it up and sounds good, so where good to go

New boater
Pull the boat and get it on the hard.
Pull the drive and change the lube, split the drive and rebuild the water pump

Pull the fuel filter and dump the contents into a clear container. See if there is anything in there except clean gas

Replace fuel filter
Pull distributor cap and see if it needs replacing
Check battery voltage, should be close to 12.7V with it not on a charger

Find out if your issue is no spark or no fuel

Need to know if rpms increase but speed doesn't. You'll need to find out if this is engine or outdrive. Either way you'll need to start looking for a trailer

I’ve done all maintenance I could without bringing it out of the water. Previous owner said it was just serviced prior to the purchase. I’ve changed oil, fuel filter and have inspected the distributor cap and spark plugs. Lucky I haven’t started my own business or anything yet and have only taken the friends and family out.

As for the rpms, I didn’t try to much that night because didn’t want to cause anymore damage if so. I also don’t want to leave the slip and be SOL on the water or anything…

Being your first boat, and wanting to take customers out is not a good combo for a beginner. Regardless, get the boat out and check the drive for lots of metal shavings. Just a guess here but possibly you blew the upper drive.

My guess you didnt pull the drive and do all the drive maintenance you should have done when you bought the boat

You either have a toasted coupler, or more likely blown upper (which also means tou replace the whole drive)

Either way. Boat must come out of the water, and the drive must come off, and the motor may need to be pulled

Thank you I was thinking some gears. And I’ve been on and around boats for a long time just never owned one.

Thank you! I’m getting a trailer from a family friend up in Maryland he runs a wholesale trailer company! So will have it out ASAP!

I read your thread title, so only following your wishes.

Have you pulled the boat out of the water for the emergency?
Not yet, didn’t come with a trailer so I’m in the process of purchasing one now. It’s very very uneconomical for me to pull it out of the water and on a service stand in my area. I think I was told $15-20 a foot to lift it out of the water daily. I have been looking for a trailer prior to this.

Also is there a way to go about rebuilding the upper drive if that is the problem? Or would it be more of replace at that point? Replace vs rebuild?!?!

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,...... I'd buy a SEI aftermarket drive, 'n go Boatin',.....

If the upper is trashed, the lower is fulla the debris from the upper,....

you can, however because the debris would have made it to the bottom, you have to rebuild the bottom too. at that points it is much less expensive to simply replace the drive

Awesome thank you and I’ve heard mixed reviews about the SEI replacement but some have said it would be fine especially with my smaller boat. Plus it has that 3 year warranty!

I don't have an SEI drive, but of the many accounts I've read here where people bought them as replacements, at least 90% seem pretty happy with them.

Mercruiser assembly, you might say is perfect. Lab coat kind of perfect.... GM had Mercruiser build the ZR1 C4 Corvette engine ( Lotus designed ) if it tells you anything.. The price reflects the build quality, and the question becomes, is that high of a quality necessary. With a 3.0L, rebuild tolorances are probably good enough and SEI will provide that level of accuracy, which is basically good enough, for 1/2 the cost or so
