OK, once again.....which fishfinder to buy? Kind of have it narrowed down to the new Eagle 240S/GPS or Eagle Fishmark 320? Both around the same price ($200), which is basically my limit here, and have different features. Basically GPS versus better resolution, slightly larger screen, and a few more features. I do have a hand-held GPS but was liking the combination of the Eagle 240. I also see that the Eagle 320 comes highly recommended in some of the posts. So I'm trying to decide. Any comments or other recommendations are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The eagle 320 is definatly a good choice for the price. i just bought one for my boat and i also bought a eagle intellimap. that was about $350. this was about the cheapest non-handheld device that still had some quality ti it. i know that there is a combo from eagle that has gps and a finder for about $450. any of those are good choices

Re: Fishfinder Choice

I recently installed an Eagle 480df in my nearshore boat..... Here's my prelim report that I made at the request of the seller....

As you requested, I'm sending my thoughts on the Eagle 480df that I recently
purchased from you and installed on my boat.....This is a river test....Gulf
test will come in mid-April....

The unit is a nice looking unit.....

I didn't want to continue drilling holes in the transom of my boat so I
built an adapter plate from poly....plastic and mounted the transducer and
speed wheel on it.....

Screen is plenty large ...... I don't need color....

The transducer is large....On my first installation it actually acted as a
water foil and caused the boat to run unlevel.....I raised it ....now
OK......

It works well at speed....My boat goes about 55 and it worked well.....

Print on the menu controls pages is too small....Its readable in the comfort
of a driveway or on the lake but throw in some waves, sea spray, fogged
polaroids and it will be impossible to read...Print on Water depth, speed,
temp etc can be controlled but not the print that comes up on control
pages......'Goin' to the Dollar store and get some specs....

Contrast control is difficult to get accustomed to using....

Automatic sensitivity control is erratic.....I would see fish everywhere
....top to bottom....I'd know that wasn't true.......I will stay in manual
sensitivity control.....This is not new....I've never seen an automatic
sensitivity control that I really liked so never use it....

The zoom features are pretty good........just effective.... and easy to
use.....

The Split frequency page is useless.....Since it does not operate with both
frequencies simulatanously, I don't see any use for this feature....

The river was really muddy and lots of debris so this may not be a fair
comment, but I had a lot of trouble trying to determine whether the display
was showing fish or some other echo.....

I saw very little use for that thing on the right side of the screen ....I
think its called Fastrak....

I think it has plenty of power output ....500 watts will cook the fish while retrieving...

I was in about 50' depth so could get much experience from the two
frequenscies but I think the 50MHz will be good for searching for structure
while using GPS.....Once you get close, the 200MHz can help you see whats
there better....

I think it is a unit that I will be pleased with after I get a comfort and confidence level...

My fishing style is to find bait then find fish....I still don't know how
bait will appear on the screen..........I use GPS - with WAAS - and
depthfinder a lot to find fishing spots..........

I'll update after fishing in Destin for a few days....

Cl***, I was a sonarman in the USNavy and have a Masters Degree in
Electrical Engineering so I think I know what I'm talking about but I am
100% open to suggestions.....so, if you have comments please advise
me.......Its a big Gulf out there and 99.5% of it does not have any fish in
it....I need all the help I can get....

curtis

Re: Fishfinder Choice

Here is the way to buy the very best fish finder you possibly can. This works every time.

Go to the Furuno site at www.furuno.com. When you get there make yourself a list of ever current model made by Furuno. Then go to the catalogs and find the prices of those units. Redo your list beginning with the least expensive one first going to the most expensive one. Start at the top of the list and go down the prices until you feel faint. Back up one model. There you have your fish finder. Go buy it.

Using any other method of selecting a fish finder will give you an inferior unit for the money you have available. I'm not kidding a single bit.

Thom

Thom**,

My very first choice was a Furuno 6100.....

BUT, I got very bad reports about the model - even from dealers that sold it - Therefore I didn't select it....

Brad E
Would like to help you but really can't without some information. How are you going to use this new unit??? Shallow fresh water lakes and streams where resolution and power not that important, Or deep saltwater where power and resolution the very most important.

It is sort of like asking us what is the best tow vehical with out telling us if you have a 10 foot aluminum boat or a 24 foot heavy deep V.

Inland I like Lowrance units the best, Eagle is made by the same company and I see them as good for shallow water. Deeper you go the more important Power and Resolution is.

Deep salt water then I also like Furuno units. No body beats them for deep salt water.

Re: Fishfinder Choice

OK, thanks to you all for the comments. Due to several factors, including having a $25.00 gift certificate, I ended up getting the Eagle 320. Used it last weekend for the first time and not sure if I like it all that much but I guess that time will tell. Using it just in freshwater lakes and such on a 16ft aluminum boat with a 50 hp mercury so I am fairly sure that it has more features than I will ever need. I'll just have to fool around with it to see the best way to use it and all. It didn't work well at all while running at top or near top speed. I may fool around with the transducer location on the transom a little bit (maybe lower it) to see if that helps any. Thanks again!

Brad,

If you go to the Eagle webpage you can download a simulator - actually an emulator - that will help orient you with the equipment....
