Got a Sub-Troll 900 today and instructins make a big deal out of connecting the black lead back to "both the boat's ground system and the Negative battery terminal...the electrical current must be returned back to a water ground to complete the circuit".
Practically speaking, if I hook it back to the Negative terminal of my main boat battery (with engine and instruments running off it) will that be OK?
The instructions go on to say "normally the water ground is obtained via the engine...which is common to the negative battery terminal."

The battery negative terminal is connected to the engine block. The ground buss for the entire boat electrical system is connected to the battery negative terminal. That makes three ground points (engine, ground buss, negative battery) to connect to. Since they are all common, you can connect to any one of them.

Thanks Upinsmoke.
I did exactly what you say and was pleased to see the sub troll doing its thing today.
Helped to get some input.
