Have a boat with shorepower and dual batteries. The batteries are brand new. When I hook up shorepower the charger is always on, and it never goes off. Only reads about 4amps on the meter, but never seems to go off. Only thing that I ever leave on is the fridge, and that is dual voltage. Is the charger bad.? ALso the batteries always have plenty of power so I don't think they are running down.

Hi sandpaperman, welcome to iboats!!

What charger is it?

Totally depends on the type of charger you have, a smart charger can be left on because it will 'sense' the state of charge and adjust the output accordingly - when the batt is full, it stops charging.

A standard charger will just keep charging away until the batt is toast.

Aldo

I will check it out and get model. But as I sit here and think, it might have said converter/charger. Does that make sense?

Some inverters have chargers built in - they are know as 'charger/converter'.

Also, a converter can be a unit that converts 24v to 12v or visa versa.

You running 12volt or 24 on your boat?

Welcome to board, Sandpaperman.
:)

I think Aldo hit the nail on the head with the smart charger thing.
