http://www.minnkotamotors.com/products/motors/engine_mount/engine_mount_motor.asp

Hi, I came across an ad for an engine mounted trolling motor. I have two different brands shown. The motor mounts directlly to your engine. Is there anyone out there who has actually tried one of these out. Just curious how they work, I am thinking about maybe getting one? I only would be using it occasionally. Most of my fishing does not invole electric trolling. I like the idea this motor is hidden out of the way. Again if anyone has actually tried one or knows someone who has, please let me know what they think.

Thanks in advance.
That's a better mounting system than the way they used to do it, but I bet it doesn't reverse very well at all. Never used one though.

Wouldn't that be way above the transom? It's above the AV plate. The steering would be nice but on my boat that prop would be only partly under water.
Eric

Re: Engine mounted trolling motor?

Hi guys,

I wonder how well this would reverse?, thats why I am hoping someone has used one out there. I have many concerns about its performance as well.

The motor requires 13 inches between the AV plate and the waters surface. This would only work on longshaft(20" or 25" shaft) motors mounted low enough to provide the 13 inches required, or sterndrives.

Right now my boat would just make the 13 inches. Just getting some ideas, I want an electric, and would love for it to be out of sight as long as it works well.

They work OK as long as you have sufficient battery strength, the wind doesn't blow, you don't try to back up, and you have someone at the helm all the time. The overall impression I had of the one I saw was "nice idea, maybe some day it'll work out". :(

Re: Engine mounted trolling motor?

if you really want something like that I would get some trim tabs and mount two motors to them.
I do most of my fishing in shallow water that is loaded with rocks, therefore the one mounted on the motor would be useless due to the fact I keep the motor 3/4 out of the water. last thing you do is smash your lower unit off a rock! When a trolling motor is mounted just under the surface of the water they tend to pull quite a bit of air and get very noisy and loose some power.

Thanks for the input guys. I don't think I will be getting one after all. I will check out some other options.

TRIM AND TAB JUST CAME OUT WITH A NEW SYSTEM THAT WILL WORK QUITE NICE. DO A SEARCH ON TRIM AND TAB. YOU CAN NOW GET IT WITHOUT TRIM TABS. THEY ARE DIGITAL AND WORK FROM A KEY FOB SIZE CONTROLER. THEY ARE MOUNTED TO THE STERN AND ARE RAISED AND LOWERED ELECTRICLY.

Those do look very nice, however the price is a little much for me. Maybe someday.

Still can't beat bow or transom mounts for all the good points it can offer. If you want to hide it , leave it off the boat.
