I have an '84 Evinrude 50. ran ok. So I rebuilt the carbs. then it ran great. :) A couple months go by and one of the coils goes out in the Mississippi River Gulf Outlet (MR. GO). :( Motor in on 1 cyclinder fix it that night. Its been several months and i've been out in the lake plenty. Yesterday i go back down to Mr. GO and my motor is fine till i get about an hour from the launch. it was idling and suddenly cut off and would not start. I does start back up afther about 20 minutes and runes for a bout 15 minutes WOT or not it just cuts off. Doesn't bog down or anything. It just stops. Any Ideas?
Since the first time it cut off, she won't idle at all.

Check for spark when she does it. My bet is somthing is getting hot and you lose spark to the plugs.

Re: This darn thing........

The lack of spark is not the case. Is the motor cooling properly?.. it never pees hot...??

Howdy, NOF.

Have you tried pumping the primer bulb when this happens?

If you really have spark, but she wont start you may have trash in the tank, line, filter or fuel pump that is intermittently interrupting fuel flow.

Good luck. :)

Bulb stays hard and when it deos finally start it starts without pumping or choke...

NOF.....for a motor to quit like that, no chugging or coughing, IMO, you are loosing your ignition system. I have a 84' 50hp power also. If it's not overheating, which would be apparent by a slow up in rpms after a while, and you believe the fuel system is OK, the only thing left is electrical. I agree with Trent, check for spark the next time it quits.

Hey NOF....just a thought here. While the engines running, start moving the wire harness around a little. Maybe ya' got a frayed wire someplace thats grounding out the engine ignition when the boats underway.

Hmm, sounds like my 85 120hp. Figuring timer base or stator at this point cause runs great in the bucket (well, used too) and at the shop, but when I throttle up on the water.......

Not the same thing but had a snowmobile that did the same thing you are describing. Would run great for a period of time and would then quit. Let it sit for a while and it would go again for a while.

Turned out to be the coil. Apparently as the coil heated up it would cause a short or an open condition (not sure which). After it would cool it would work fine. Finally cured the problem with a new coil.

wile e

Re: This darn thing........

this motor has 2 coils one for each cylinder. coil 2 went out about 2 months ago. replaced it and it's been fine since then until the other day. butt even with only one coil, it will still run and get me home just not quickly....

Put her back in the tank, NOF.

Get a hair dryer and warm each ignition part to see if heat is killing it. Start with the powerpack.

Good luck. :)

putting it in a tank is not hte same as in the lake. does not have the same load on the prop. you may have to make several trips to the lake. the hair dryer idea sounds like it should work. try it.
