1990 15 hp Johnson won’t start, sort of sounds like it’s sucking air/leaking air

So as far as we know good compression good spark, carb all clean and all jets cleaned and no air leaks ? Is fuel new and right mix ?

I rebuilt carb 2 month ago. It has been used 3-4 times per week since. I’ve probably got 50+ hours on motor since carb was built. Fuel is less than month old, mixed properly, used the same tank and bulb I always do. No air leaks to note.

Also a thought you said the carb was rebuilt was the float switch set correctly so only fuel enters the carb before the float pin engages I have known Air to enter with incorrectly levelling to floats in carbs

I think it should be fine. I have used motors numerous times without fault since it’s been rebuilt. I could blow air in carb when it was right side up and the carb wouldn’t let me blow air in when it was upside down.

Ok so im wondering whether the choke solenoid is stuck and letting in excess air without letting in fuel is yours a manual or an electric choke/primer valve

Even if you turn idle screw to full lean and prime bulb a few times to get the fuel to plugs ?

Ok have you turned the idle screw to full lean and primed on choke only worth a shot just to try, if it starts it will use up fuel from choke and die out after 10 to 20 seconds

Learning how to start a motor.----learning how to diagnose a " no start " condition is a lost art.
Very true! That’s my goal with this experience to learn how to diagnose it. I’ve been through all the steps I know…
Compresssion check, spark check, make sure all my grounds are tightened, making sure I’ve got good fuel pressure in my bulb, making sure my plugs are not fouled. I’ve put fuel straight into the cylinders, I’ve tried starting in neutral, starting in forward, I had the choke all the way open, all the way closed. I pulled flywheel checked woodruff key, inspected the flywheel, made sure new clean fuel going into carb. I know I’ve mixed fuel right. I have 3 tanks and three hoses. I tried all of those, I changed our the fuel line connector on the motor. I even checked the screen on my fiel
Pump and put a different fuel pump on. Made sure no kinks in fuel line. I’ve got nothing so far for bark/cough.

I’m a nurse by trade and completely self taught. My dads mechanical knowledge is pretty much 0. Most everything I do is trial and error or stuff I find on here. I’m trying to become more competent with every motor. I’m 34, so 99% of these motors are 20+ years older than me. None of my buddies know anything about these old 2 smokers. I’m stuck figuring it out for myself
