I'm not sure what year this engine is. Where do I locate the Manufacturer # and Model #? Maybe you can answer my question without that info. The engine has autolite 353 sparkplugs in it now. I want to replace these with marine sparkplugs.....which sparkplug should I use. Please recommend brand and number. Thanks. dstout13

dstout,

The model and serial #'s will be in one or two places.

1. There should be a metal tag affixed to the clamp bracket.

2. There is usually model and serial #'s stamped into one of the core "freeze" plugs on the side of the engine.

Howdy, DStout13.

OMC recommended Champion J4J plugs for the 9.5.
The modern Champion equivalent should be gapped at .030.

Gap your points at .020.

Fuel mix should be 50:1.

Good luck. :)

Champion no longer makes the J 6 J or the J 4 J plugs. The Autolite L353 you have is a direct cross from the J 4 J. FWIW, the Autolite L303 is thier version of the Champion J 6 J...these are for marine applications & work just fine for the older j/e engines

Re: 9.5 Evinrude Sportwin outboard

The Champion JxJ plugs were not strictly marine use plugs.

I used J4J, J6J, J8J, and even J10J plugs in chain saws, lawn mowers and racing Karts.

I prefer Champion plugs when available.

Spark plug heat range is not a marine/non-marine issue. It is an engine characteristics issue.

I recommend the modern Champion equivalent of the J4J. :)

Re: 9.5 Evinrude Sportwin outboard

I listed wrong Autolite #'s in my previous post...Champion J6J is Autolite 303; Champion J4J is Autolite 353. Like JB, I have used these plugs for other 2 cycle apps besides marine & did not mean to infer they were only for marine apps.

Champion's discontinued J6J crosses to their current J6C and their discontinued J4J crosses to their current J4C if this helps anyone.
