I have a few questions about how this is supposed to work:

1: When you first start your motor is it normal for the water pump to have to "prime up"? My tell tale doesnt flow until about 30-40 seconds after I crank it up.

2: Should the water out of the tell tale be hot?

3: In cold weather will the volume out of the tell tale change?

4: I am not running hot, and think i have a stuck open thermostat, is there any way to check this?

Thanks,
Brett

Take your thermostat out and look at it. To check it place it in a pan of boiling water. My Merc 25 does the same thing. THe tell-tale is behind the thermostat and the water flow fluxuates with the opening and closing of the thermostat especially in the winter. In the summer time it doesn't fluxate as much.

also, the water coming out the tell-tale should be hot but not so hot it burns your hand. Your engine head should be warm to the touch but not so hot it burns you. Hope this helps.

It may take a short while for the tell tale to operate on a looper. The water cavity is very large and takes a few seconds to fill. Your water pressure gage should start working almost right after the motor starts since it is T'd into the supply.

Make sure you are using the black thermostst assemblys. If you have the white ones, replace them. You can also upgrade to the 93-94 style cap and spring and elimanate a lot of hoses on the outside of your powerhead.

Good luck!

From what you are saying, it is operating normally then. I have never taken it out in the winter time so i wasnt sure how it was supposed to work but noticed it was working differently. It does work differently than in the summer time. In the summer the water temp is around 80 degrees and Saturday it was only 53 degrees.

Thanks
Brett Molaison
