I have a 1991 Johnson 225 that occasionally had a noise sounding like the bendix in the starter was still engaged, but upon inspection it wasn't. After reving the engine it would go away. I have now found a small piece of u-shaped metal approximately 1/16 hanging between the flywheel and stator which I pulled out. The engine is running perfectly and charging. Is my stator coming apart? Do I need to worry? Also, what is the torque for the flywheel nut.

Re: 1991 JOHNSON 225

The "u-shaped" metal could be the remains of a cotter-pin or some other linkage supporting pin (perhaps???). The stator windings are copper and the charge coils and power coil are enclosed in an epoxied case, so without looking I would guess the stator is okay. Only a visual inspection will tell for sure. The torque for the flywheel nut is around 120-130 ft.lbs. - I don't have exact spec here (I'm at home), but I'll look it up when I get a chance and post it here.

-John

Thanks for your replies. The piece I pulled out was not part of a cotter pin because it is flat and is approximately 1 inch wide and looks like it is broken off of another piece about the same size,u-shaped. The piece is no more than 1/16 inch thick.

Something similar happened to my 200HP engine a year ago, and mechanic found a loose magnet desintegrated for the rotation of the flywheel. Check the voltage at your battery gauge.

That last description helps. Pull the flywheel and inspect the outer edges of both charge coils and the power coil. It sounds like the u-shaped thingie might be part of one of the coil laminations.

-John
