HARD TO GET REVERSE ON 1986 150 EVINRUDE

CAN ANYONE HELP WITH A SMALL PROBLEM I'M HAVEING WITH MY 1986 150 HP EVINRUDE MOTOR. WHEN I PUT IT IN REVERSE IT JUMPS IN AND OUT AND MAKES A NOISE LIKE IT'S NOT GOING IN GEAR ALL THE WAY. IS THIS A ADJUSTMENT AND IF IT IS WHERE IS IT MADE AT THE ENGINE OR AT THE GEAR SHIFT CONTROL BOX. <br />THANKS FOR ANY HELP<br />BLOCKAIDRUNNER

Hi BR,<br />the adj is made at the engine.Put controlbox in Rev and adj barrel on cable to engauge R gear.Then shift into N and spin prop by hand to see if it spins freely with no noise(clicking) If it does then shift into forward<br />and try to turn it counter clock wise by hand<br />it should not turn.REMEMBER TO HAVE ING KEY OFF AND PULL THE PLUG WIRES. It is easier to drive the boat with two hands. Hope this helps.<br />...have fun... corm

Hey OBJ, my unit had just been pulled for a impeller replacement, then gone into for a shift pawl that broke on the test run. Is it standard practice to adjust linkage after dropping unit? seems like it should be and shop should have done that.
