Boy does that bring back memories! There were a couple of different places they used for the connection. The easy one was a small oblong plate on the side of the mid section with two screws. Remove the plate and you can see the brass connector. Remove one of the bolts in the connector and drop gearcase.

The other was where the connector was even with the top of the gearcase. Drop the gearcase slightly and you can see the connector.

Unfortunately some were under the powerhead and like I said I can't remember about that exact year. If you can't locate the plate or connector as described then it will be under the powerhead. Sorry I can't be of more help.

Good luck!

Re: johnson cd19s 5.5hp 1962 impeller replacement

I have done a waterpump replacement before but it was on a 1970 6 horse. It was slick and easy. Took me less than half an hour. But this '62 motor is driving me up a wall.

I am having the same problem. Gearcase is dropped and no connector screws on the shift bar. Been told to remove the powerhead and disconnect the shift mechanism there. I have removed as many bolts as I can find and still nothing. Are there some hidden bolts that require something else to be removed? Are there seals to worry about and o-rings that are holding the thing together? Or am I just not pulling hard enough? If anyone has pictures it would be great!! Thanks!

You have to remove power head on this model, there are seven screws to remove, all the same length except stb rear when power head is removed you will see the shifter and top of **** rod. Remove nut, star washer and another nut. Also look todays post Kirscher. It shows how the cup, spring, carbon seal and 0 ring.flanged washer and cork seal is assembled.

After a little break and a couple beers to ease my nerves, I got it apart - to find that the water pump was just fine!!!! Put it all back together and now I still need to figure out why it wasn't running. Oh well! The joys of boat ownership. Up to the carb!!
