Motor kicks up in reverse

I have a Johnson 9.9 extra long shaft(19950.<br />When I put the engine in reverse the emgine kickd up out of the water. How can I prevent this?<br /><br />HELP!!!

The tilt lever on the side has a "lock" and "unlock" position. Must be in lock to prevent kick up.

There is a built-in mechanism, preventing this. It is a small bracket that catches the rod to adjust your motors tilt on motorbracket.<br /><br />The mechanism is engaged and released with a little handle on motor bracket, marked release/engage, outside, below chokerbutton.<br /><br />You release it every time you tilt motor up.<br /><br />If it does not function, the bolt is probly rusted, clean, lubricate and loosen.

djohns and G Dane are correct about the lock mechanism...just keep it in the unlocked position when going forward. just a Thought

And tyhought101 is correct too. Never run it locked-down,as it could rip the transon up if you hit something under water.<br />It's best to leave it unlocked, and just idle only in reverse. If it kicks-up in idle (unlocked), your idle speed adjustment is set way too high.
