HI My freind has a 1985 johnson 140 outboard. It has been a good motor until it srarted to run bad, missing ect.He pulled the cover off the motor while it was running and told me there was water coming from the front of the motor. He tried to make it in to shore but the motor really made noise then seized up.One rod cap came threw the block. That piston has chunks off the top and a little water in it.When we took off the front carb cover water poured out.Any thoughts? THANKS LARGEY

Re: 140 looper

Ahoy, Largey. Just a guess, but I think it's broke.

Sounds like a failed gasket or other seal let water into one crankcase, which then blew out the reeds for that cylinder and finally froze the rod needles. That caused catastrophic failure.

I don't suppose it matters whether that is correct or not.

Your friend now has a perfect excuse to hang a 130 Honda or one of the soon-to-be-released Suzuki 140s on his 'toon.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

Re: 140 looper

I had an old Johnson 70hp that did basically the same thing. I got on the gas and boom! I pulled the cover off, didn't see anything obviously wrong. Then I tilted the motor up to look at the lower unit and thats when hot saltwater came pouring out of all 3 carbs!! OUCH.. I was towed in the boat sat a day or so while I thought of what to do. That old johnson served my father and then Me well, I set it out at the curb and it was scooped up in a matter of minutes. I now have a Johnson 90hp v4, its been great so far.

Re: 140 looper

WHAT CAUSED THAT WAS PROBABLY A HOLE IN THE BAFFLE PLATE, THAT ALLOWED WATER FROM THE COOLING JACKET TO ENTER THE CYLINDER,CAUSING A HYDRAULIC LOCK= BENT ROD - SIMPLY A MATTER OF METAL CORROSION, NOT BRAND PROBLEM
