I have a 12' fg jon boat with a 1963 5.5 Evinrude hung on it. Just bought last week. Motor runs excellent, but the bow is grabbing all kinds of air. It is not bouncing it just stay there and I can hear the motor lugging I set the stop pin on the lowest possible setting. Cavitation plate was about 1 1/2" below the bottom and I shimmed it to even. I also wedged the motor out another 1/4" to tuck the bottom of the motor in.
What do you thing about a Doel Fin for this motor? The plate seems big enough to support it. Already fitted but not drilled holes yet.
With a passenger in the bow I know it will come down but I will be fishing this boat alone mostly. Better half likes our big boat better. Any thoughts or suggestions?
Thanks,
Mike

If you fish alone, buy an extention rod for the tiller handle. Then sit on center seat. The boat wont carry more in the rear end. I dont think the 5.5 has enough power to raise the boat on doelfins.

Just my humble opinion, i never seen your boat. Could you maybe post or mail i picture.
salg@romantiskbad.dk

G DANE
I suspected the same as far as not enough power. I installed an extension tiller after I posted yesterday afternoon. I thought about putting the fuel tank just forward of the middle seat also.
Haven't taken after pics yet, only before, will present when done in a day or 2.
Thanks for the response,
Mike

The only way to get this puppy to plane was to make a steering wheel out of sandwiched plywood pieces, and a bicycle hub. This "wheel" can be seen mounted to the port gunwhale.
Stainless steel pulleys wre used at the transom, and it was strung with 1/8 galvanized wire rope.
She is operated from the middle bench.
There is a lanyard attached to the kill switch, and the throttle is controled by tension on the tiller's twist grip.
This is a 12Foot Lonestar with a Merc 7.5HP.

I like the trailer tongue support! I knew those plastic kiddie toys had an after-use!
