First post here, but I've been reading ya'll for a while and it seems that a lot of you know your stuff, so I a few questions about my old outboard.
#1. Having problems getting it in forward, reverse works fine. I'm 99% sure there is a problem with the shift linkage. I have tried adjusting this through the access plate on the lower unit and can now get it to go 50% of the time. I can not seem to get enough slack out of the linkage. Am I missing something? Could there be worn gears, linkage etc in the foot?

#2. I've read on previous post that you should adjust the timing on these older motors to run better on modern fuels. The motor idles roughly and seems to be rather slow. The carb is adjusted right. Would adjusting the timing help these matters?

Any info or guidance would be appreciated. Thanks guys and gals.

Hello Jmac
You should not be able to adjust the shift rod the way you describe. There is an adjustment feature on or behind the shift leaver. Loosen the screw and the clamp bolt and adjust as necessary. Remember to reconect the shift rod in the window properly first.
The timing on these motors is not adjustable as such. (as far as I know) It's ether right, or it's not.If you haven't cleaned or replaced you points in a while, it might be time now.
Yes you may have a worn shift dog or some worn parts in your lower unit. I would change the gear lube and try to make the adjustment first. Let us know how your making out. Good luck
