What are some manufacturers thinking when they put all metal rubrails on boats????Are they nuts or they just dont give a crap.I had a guy docking next to me last week with a 27ft searay and he had trouble with the wind so I fended him off of my new Imron job with a large fender. He thanked me for the help and I told him I was protecting my investment. He replied"you should have seen the gouge I put in a guys boat last week,I felt bad"His boat had all metal so he would be protected but it would destroy any boat it rubbed. What are these boat builders thinking about????My 280 Regal has a good size rubber insert so Im not going to mess up anyone elses boat and my Mako has a very big rubber only side rail. That metal crap really upsets me.Charlie

Rightly so - it's the whole F the other guy mentality creeping into boating. They don't understand that boating is all about camaraderie and lending a hand. I think most boaters rather see their own boat sink than damage some elses.

crazy charlie, maybe you should replace your soft rubrails once you are docked. I'm thinking, hang huge fenders covered with 6" steel spikes along your "exposed" sides.

Sounds like a bad idea to me even for the boat with the steel rub rails. If it gets banged enough, would steel have enough give, or just start warping? If it gets beat up and warped enough you might start getting water in.... worst case have top end seperating from hull.

just a thought

Jim

Im not looking for the "get even" mentality. As Ralph eluded to,I dont want to damage someone elses boat just as much as I dont want someone damaging my boat.I would rather help and give moral support to a fellow boater as he attempts to dock rather than being out there to protect my boat from his rubrail made of metal.Charlie

Oh great and I was just getting over the fact that the DNR (department of natural resorces) put huge crushed cement stones along the loading ramps . yea those nice sandy beaches were too inviting for people to pull up on .. Yea I know they want to keep the shore from washing away..

But a shiny stainless polished rubrail looks so nice.......

Yeah some things seem like they're just not thought through fully. Stainless rub rails are a sales + and nothing else.

In its defense. I have solid rub rails and a new paint job. In the last two years I have acquired two nice digs from other boats at the ramp. IMHO It is the Captains of these boats that let it come in contact with your boat. I still can not understand why these people would freak out if they bumped into you with there car but with there boat it is no big deal? I don't care if you have rubber rub rails or not just keep your boat off of mine.

I think we need a law that all rub rails on boats are the same height and can take a 5 mph impact with no damage. :D

Re: All metal rubrails, give me a break

charlie,

I have the appropriate extruded aluminum with rubber insert that was OEM to my boat and even it is a little banged up. 15years of wear. I am going to replace it. On a 25ft boat it will cost me under 400 bucks to do. Do it without the insert and go stainless and you can cut that in half.

Accountant driven engineering bad for boats and boat owners.

Re: All metal rubrails, give me a break

I can see that it is a cost issue but it is 2 fold. The lesser cost of making the rubrail all metal and the cost fixing boats after they are hit or bumped by an all metal rubrail.  Charlie

Re: All metal rubrails, give me a break

I vote with Charlie on this one for two reasons
1)As he pointed out all metal rub rails destroy the finish of anything they rub against.
2)The rubrail is usually covering the deck to hull joint, this is one of the weakest places on a boat, I want some rubber there to absorb an impact and not transfer the impact to the joint and causing it to fail.
