I have a 19 ft open fisherman with a 88 SPL. ALthough the hull is rated for upto a 150 the 88 does a good job. I have never had a problem getting the boat to plane.

However, recently the motor seems to have lost power. It idles fine, and even throttles up and sounds as though it is running fine. However, it doesn't seem to be able to get the boat on a plane now.

ANy ideas?

Hey coaster,
Is your engine equiped with a tach? It would help to know if there has been a drop in RPMs at WOT since the problem occured.
Backlash

Backlash;

Unfortunatly not. However, I took the cover off afternonn to change the plugs. There was a metal rod that goes from the throttle cable to a arm just under the fly wheel that has an adjustment nut on it. Well,the nut had come off and the arm had come loose. Would this be some sort of control that adjusts the gear ratio for power to the lower unit as you throttle up? Because, with the boat on the trailer, I reattached it, cranked it up, put it in gear and gave it some gas. It seems to be spinning the prop faster now than Saturday when this started. I hope that was the problem.

Sorry for the non mechanical terms above. I am not much of a mechanic.

However, I was on and around Whidbey Island in February doing some work. That area is beautiful.

Sounds like rod to timer base, important to check timing after reattaching rod.

The rod to to the timer base was unattached. How do I check the timing after reattaching?

Thanks

Need manual, timming light,tach, final check at 5000 rpms. You can set the timming 4 degrees retarded from OEM specs at idle to get close, then raise rpms for final check. Read safety instructions in manual.

Coaster,

If it were mine, I would take it to a dealer. Explain/show them exactly what happened and tell them you just want them to make sure everything is adjusted correctly and to perform a "sync and link." Shouldn't cost you ore than one hour of labor.

Hey Coaster,
Listen to Djohns,that rod must be sync-ed to throttle opening,and also controls engine timming. You could do it with a manual,but I think that it would be much safer to take it to a qulified Johnson/Evinrude shop.
Let us know how it comes out

Guys;

Thanks for the help. It timed it as best I could. Took it fishing this weekend but was careful not to open it all the way up. It ran great, but I am taking to a local Mechanic who specializes in OMC this week anyway.
