I am able to start my 1973 Johnson 50HP but when I put throtle to it, it just dies, but if I hit the choke at just the right time when I throtle up, she will stay running strong.

Perhaps varnish in the carbs or "Green death". The gas/oil mix turns to gum when it evaporates and will clog the carb.

Speisfam...... That condition usually indicates that the carburetors have become fouled. The cure being to remove, clean, and rebuild them. However, always check the compression and spark first. Compression should be 100+ psi on all cyls, and the spark should jump a 7/16" gap with a strong blue flame.

if the carbs have an idle adjustment, try backing them out 1/4 each....
