I have a 1967 60hp Johnson Super Sea Horse, mod# VXL-13A. She starts hard and then will idle, but when you try to place into gear she dies under load. I have had it in to the mechanic 3 times and he has replaced the cap, wires, coil, rebuilt the carb, and the fuel pump, and she still won't run. The motor is a V-4, two johnson dealers in my area tell me that they never made a 60hp V-4. It is a single lever control.

Howdy, EasyEd.

Your engine is behaving as though it is not runnning on all 4.

1. Do a compression check. All cylinders should compress over 100psi and there shouldn't be more than 15psi difference among them.

2. With the engine running on the muffs, remove and short out each spark plug in turn. If there is a drop in rpm or the engine stalls, that is a good cylinder. If there is no change, that cylinder is not making power. Do not be fooled when the engine seems to idle well. It can do that on two cylinders.

3. If there is one dead cylinder and it has good spark, check out the reeds for that one. If there are 2 dead and they are side by side, overhaul the carb that feeds them.

4. Let us know what you have found. If you still have trouble, we'll give you some new tests to try.

Good luck. :)

thanks J.B. Sorry so long to reply, just had a hip replaced, and can't get to computer very easily. I had checked the compression and everything checked out all right. It will be a while before I can check the other things. Thanks for the ideas will let you know what I find out.
eazyed

EasyEd.... Just for the record, OMC manufactured the V/4 60hp model from 1964 through 1967.
