Tried to start my winterrised motor for first time this year in driveway.

Starter almost couldnt pass the tdpts when crancking. Crancks fine and fast with plugs out. I used fully charged 50 Amphrs automotive battery and automotive startcables where i cut clips and soldered terminals at motor end. Compression was 148/150 at very slow crancking speed. Cables and connection to battery got hot. The starter was in water at end of season, but i cleaned it and lubricated. Everything looked fine. Is the battery too small ?

If the battery cables are geting hot, that means that there is a bad connection or the cables are too small to handle the amps needed by the starter. Make sure your cables are large enough and connections are clean and tight.

I did start a friends car with these cables, no problem ! Does an outboard this size pull more amps ?

You're using jumper cables to try and start this motor? Your friends car probably had a battery in it too that had at least some voltage in it. If those are Wally World type jumper cables, try and start your friends car with them without a battery in it and you'll be supprised. It won't even turn the engine over.
I'd hook up the starter on your motor straight to a battery like it's supposed to be and I'll bet it will turn over just fine.

Good luck

One more thing after I posted that last reply. Maybe you do have a battery in your boat and your trying to jump start it from your car. If that battery in the boat is no good (Ground Zero) then you need to put a hot battery in it. Bottom line is just get a good battery hooked up to the motor.

Thanks for your reply, Down South.

In fact this was a brand new fully charged Bosch battery. The starting cables was not cheap thin cables, but heavy duty, with big plierlike connectors. Connectors and the attachment to cables were hot.

You got me. Usually a hot cable or connection means a bad connection or undersize cable. I didn't fully understand that you had a new battery hooked to the motor. I'm not that familure with your motor. It's possible that the starter is going bad. It may need to be taken down and cleaned or repaired if it was under water for a while. You may want to check the selenoid to. Try jumping across the two main terminals of the solenoid with a pair of pliers or heavy wire to see if it cranks over any better. Other that that, I'd start looking at the starter.

Hello.
I had the very problem last year.
There was a bit of corrosion on the inside of the starter.I took some real light sand paper and went over the metal inside of the housing and with a rough dry cloth over the coil.
Then it still caused trouble.Next I loosened the bolts holding the starter together just enough to feel it turn without any resistance.Tried to start the engine that way and she had her going just like new.
I had to take the entire thing apart again and until the brushes were in just so, it did not turn easily.
Maybe your problem is the same and the starter is binding up just a bit.
Good luck.

Thanks for alle replies.

The starter turns freely by hand, thoug resistance from the brushes can be felt of cource.

I had it apart and cleaned it totally, quite messy at the end at the brushes in fact. Brushes and commutator looked fine after cleaning and grinding with 500 paper.

How many amps should this starter use crancking ?

Starter turns motor VERY fast when plugs are out.

Would it do so if bad ? I tried to spray WD 40 in cylinders to wash some of the winterrizing oil out, but it didnt help. Our WD40 is almost unflammable.

When plugs are it takes 3/4 second to pass every tdp.

Cables get hot 1 feet from battery, starter and solenoid stays cool. How fat must cables be ?

Hi G Dane, I'd correct that heating cable problem. That cable shouldn't be heating up like that. That is a sign of a weak connection and could very well be causing your slow cranking problem. The cable that's heating up, Check it at both ends to make sure it is clean and connected tight.

Good luck :)
