I have an old Evinrude BigTwin 35hp. I changed oil in lower unit and now I cannot get shifting rod to work and it's stuck in reverse.

I noticed drain plug has a long pin attached to it, and inside hole I can see it will fit in some part that moves when I move shift rod.

Do I have to open lower unit to fix problem or there is a way to re insert it and have shift working (I can't believe they attached to drain screw....)

Val

VALV.... The philips screw you removed is a shoulder bolt type screw that in reality is the pivot pin for the shift lever. The drain screw is a much larger screw with a plain slot (not a philips). Bottom line is that to correct your mistake, you'll need to dismantle that lower gearcase to put those parts where they belong.

Well, now you did it. You removed the pivot pin, not the drain plug. The drain screw has a slotted head, and the pivot pin has a phillips head. You found you needed a phillips screwdriver, didn't you?

Ah, you didn't ruin anything but you gave yourself a headache. The pivot pin goes into a hole into the shift lever, as I recall, and you might be able to get the shift lever in position so you can reinsert it if you fool around with it. It's better to do it that way if you can than to disassemble the gearcase. If you do end up having to take off the gearcase, though, drop it very gently so everything stays in place. Then look for the spot where the pivot pin goes, and try to maneuver the shifter lever in place and insert the pin. Having done that, you should be able to raise the gearcase housing (lower half) back up into place and reattach it. Before doing so, make sure the spaghetti seal is in place and not compressed to the point where it won't seal up the case (the seal between the the upper and lower gear housing).

I strongly recommend that you get a parts manual before taking apart the gearcase -- can do the procedure without one, but only if everything works out fine and you don't dislodge something you can't figure out how to replace.

I hope this helps. Draining the oil, by the way, is done by loosening the upper drain plug (the vent plug) above and at the rear of the ventilation plate. The oil is drained from the plug (slotted screw) at the rear of the gearcase.

@#$%#$@ !!! People learn one thing: NEVER DO JOBS IN A HURRY !!! Learn from my stupidity.

Thank you guys, yes screw had phillips head, and I even wandered why Evinrude made it different.....

I guess I'll have to dismantle case, now I have 8 slotted screws stuck big time and try to get them loose it'll be fun.

Thanks again...I'll go drop a hammer on my toe for punishment....

Val

Val - before you break a couple of the other screws and disassemble - try to get a pocket light and look into the little hole, while you get your brotherinlaw to fool a bit with the shifter. You might suddenly see end of the shifting fork pass with a 1/4" hole in it get something through it then ! tell brotherinlaw to freeze and screw back in. It can be done in many cases - saves lot of time.

Hello.
If you decide to try and loosen those bolts, you may find that heating them up for just a few seconds may make your job a lot easier. If you think you have trouble with having loosened the pivot, think again and imagine what a broken bolt that you have to drill out can be......
Go with the Dane and see if you can find the little hole.
Grinding the tip of your pivot screw from a 90 degree to a more pointed tip can help you get it in easier. But don't over do it.
Good luck.

I really feel overwhelmed with all these nice replies. I heated screws just a little and they came loose in a hurry (didn't want to melt seals and rubbers).

I am just thinking how great this "information age" is. There were Bulletin Boards once, but all this help online is incredible. I couldn't even think about doing things I am doing if it wasn't for Forums like this.

Thank you again immensely, and I really feel I am guilty and owe something to you guys.
I tried to "bribe" a well known member offering an item, but he refused since he does help just for the fun.

Val
