So far I have just been lurking and finding out lots of good info. But, now I have a problem and I can't find the answer so here goes.

I received a 1964 Johnson 9.5 from a friend for a price to be determined after I got it running properly. He said it was overheating. I thought no problem I'll just change the impeller and away we go. So I took the lower end off and sure enough there was rubber everywhere.

Only problem is that the driveshaft did not come down with the lower unit. I have since removed the powerhead and can see where the shaft goes into the engine and have been soaking it in WD-40 for a week and putting wood blocks on the bottom of the engine while holding the driveshaft and hitting the wood with a hammer all to no avail.

If I ever do get the driveshaft out, the lower part of it has quite a bit of scoring on it where it goes into the lower end should I still use it?

Any help would be appreciated.

Tx

Re: Johnson 9.5 driveshaft stuck

Hi Meyer
You have a case of what I call sword in the stone syndrome. At this point there isn't much to loose. It is how ever worth a try. Be creative. I have welded things to the drive shaft in order to get a good hold. Clamped it in a vise and used hydrolic jacks to try and push the power head off. I've soaked them in everything I could think of (for a couple of years on one). I've tried the slide hammer routine. The last one I had was a 6hp evin. I ended up disesembleing the powerhead. Now just having the crank and drive shaft, I thought I would heat and beat. I never did get that sucker apart. Sorry to say that the odds are against you. But you still have to try. Every once in a while you'll get lucky.

Re: Johnson 9.5 driveshaft stuck

Thanks for the help. I am happy to say that I finally got it out. After a week of soaking with WD I clamped the driveshaft in a vice between 2 pieces of soft wood with the engine hanging down over a bushel basket full of rags. Then I put a piece of wood over the engine and hit it with a large hammer. 2 good wacks and that's all she wrote. Now to get it back together, so much for the quick impeller change.

That should actually work well for you when it comes to the "price to be determined"....
- Scott
