Hi all,

I recently bought a 1959 18hp Johnson Seahorse.
The previous owner had said it ran fineand had taken it for a short ride. It had been sitting for 3 years.
I took it for a ride and it slowly began to lose power and is now running at about 40% of what it had a week ago.
He said he cleane the gas tank with air pressure and did not get all the crud out because I found more. I pulled the carb and cleaned everything except the jets. Points look great, has good comprssion, and I put a new pick up tube in the gas tank, and cleaned that also. Has good spark. Seems like the bottom cylinder runs a tad bit cooler than the top one. The motor idles fine....HELP

Thanks Mike

Clean the carb again and the jets.
That seems obvious. Do you have reason to believe something else have happend?
:)
/Bear

Oh,

I did run it through some pretty dirty water and was wondering how this effects the water pump. and if their is a way to clean and inspect it without a service manual.
The water was full of weeds and they got hung up on the lower unit.
Thanks again.

Yes, dirty water effects the water pump. But if you just did it once - don't think about it.

You can pull the prop and remove weeds in order to protect the propeller shaft oil seal.

/Bear

If you decide to keep the motor Definately get a ser. Manual or at least go to the library and copy
basic service out of a manual.
Spike

Hello.
Sometimes on these old engines the packing in the needle valve housing is worn to the point, where the needle valves vibrate and open up thereby producing the wrong mix.It maybe worth your while to get some packing (little flexible material washers)#43-123 for a few dollars and thereby tighten your needle valves.
Good luck.
