I have a Johnson 1988, 88 HP, it was serviced 2 years ago. I am on an island and wont be able to get a manual for a while... and I am not a mechanic.
I have removed all the fasteners.. the unit drops about two inches... it may be the shift rod... how do I disconnect this?
Also the lower gear oil was very black and smelled very strong... is this normal?

Thanks fella's

Re: Lower unit wont drop

The shift linkage (rod) must be disconnected below the carbs by removing the screw (or bolt). It then passes through a clever piece of rubber gasket and it is also curved towards the top. If you disconnected that linkage and got 2" it should drop if not recjeck that rod linkage. Once the driveshaft disconnects (usually at 2-1/2" you can work the lower unit slightly by twisting (LIGHTLY!) and it should drop.

Be advised that linkage bolt is a pain in the butt! Having black oil just denotes heavy use and old age (could be wrong oil too). Be thankful it was not water (milky colored).

Use proper gear oil and lightly grease all the rubber O ring seals on the water pump prior to assembly.

Bob

Thanks Bob,
You're a star. I'll give it a try right away.
The old oil may have been bad low quality, I noticed that the old plugs were cheapies too.
I have bought some Pensoil marine lower gear lube (I hope thats OK)... I'll see how that runs. I run the boat about 10 hours a week (marine research.... on a tiny grant.. so I cant afford to lose the motor!)
Thanks again Bob

Re: Lower unit wont drop

OK Somethings weird here, what am I doing wrong?
I can hardly even see the linkage at the top of the shift rod. I cannot see any way of accessing it without removing the carbs!? surely that cant be right
If this is meant to be done once a year it cant be this much hassle?
How about the 6 bolt housing at the top (and forward) of the lower unit? it is visible and accessible.
Any suggestions greatly appreciated
