Have a 94 Evinrude 60. New powerhead last season. Runs good (5200 rpm), starts easy, but as i was running down river, engine shut down, no alarms. Would not turn over for a minute. Then refired without incident. Not first time this has happened. Any ideas?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Posts: 2 | Registered: Jun 2002 | IP: Logged

clanton
Admiral
Member # 2789

posted June 25, 2002 02:24 PM
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The pistons may be sticking, should be proped to turn about 6000 rpms, several service bulletins on this engine. I would do compression test, if within specs, do the service bulletins, complete check of fuel system for pressure and air leaks. Timming has been changed also, but I dont have specs.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Posts: 1357 | From: Crystal River/Panama City Fl | Registered: Jul 2001 | IP: Logged

Jhar655380
First Mate
Member # 11797

posted June 27, 2002 08:49 AM
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Compression checks at 125, 110 and 125. Some oil is coming from bottom of engine.

Re: Evinrude 60

Sounds like an overheating problem. Engine gets hot and shuts down then cools and restarts. Change your impeller in your water pump. Do you have a good flow coming out of the pee hole? Can you hold your hand on the head for a count of three before having to quickly remove it? I don't know about the oil problem. Is it coming out from the base of the engine or the lower unit? Your timing will only change when you shear the key in your flywheel.

Oil is coming from base of engine. Good water flow from pee hole. New impeller installed when powerhead was replaced (fall 2000).

I noticed you have lower compression in number 2. I would take a look at that cylinder as it is not uncommon to score that piston on an extended cruise in the 4000 RPM range. Especially if the motor is "lugging". That motor really, as Clanton stated, needs to be capeable of 6000 RPM. And we always richen up the mid range on those carbs. Don't forget -- if your carbs have air jets for the mid range, you have to smaller to go richer.

What do you wanna bet that it has a new p/h because #2 went out before?

Good luck!

Re: Evinrude 60

I just found this web site and seem your problem with your 60 Evinrude. I have had many problems with my 60, 5 tear downs. My last discovery was the most interesting and should be something you will want to check. I believe many of the 60 problems can be traced to the electric primer. This solenoid has a plastic maintenance valve installed with a brass shrader valve in the end of it. I finally discovered a small crack in the plastic valve my last tear down. What is significant about this is the fuel supplied to the solenoid is "Teed" into the #2 carberator fuel supply line. Under normal operation this allowed the #2 carberator to suck air which results in a slow death to the #2 cylinder.
To check for this condition simply hit your choke with the hood off and see if you get any fuel spurting out around that red plastic valve. The fix is also simple. Remove the valve by loosening the four screws on the end of the solenoid and pull the valve out. Then plug the center of the valve with epoxy glue. This will eliminate the leak and also will prevent from using the maintenance valve for fogging your engine. That really isn't a problem as most folks don't use it anyway.

Good Luck
