Engine dies

I bought a 1973 Johnson 65. I cleaned the carbs last year (it had been sitting up a while) and run it the whole summer. I decided to soak & put in 3 carb kits, three new spark plugs, & new fuel lines. Now it runs out of the water OK, and I can see fuel going into all 3 carbs, but when I put it in the water cranks OK, engage the shifter and it dies, repeatedly. I can hear the carbs spit occationally. Acts like it is bogging down. Very frustrating

Re: Engine dies

I've gone through the exact same deal with my '86 140hp. Cleaned carbs, installed carb kits/sparkplugs, etc. Runs OK until you put it in gear, then it stalls almost immediately.

Unfortunately I don't know the answer, but maybe getting your post back to the top will find someone who can help both of us.

Good luck!

Re: Engine dies

I pulled the new spark plugs and noticed the top one appears unused where the other two look used?? Does this mean this cylinder hasn't been firing? Also, pulled the lower unit (been running hot). The guy I biught it from says the impeller is new (he installed). It looks new but witch way does it go in?

there was a post on this before that i read. They said to spin the prop as you put the housing on and the impeller should seat itself properly.

I had a similar problem with a 78 140. Turned out the idle was way to slow.

Might be a good idea to check to syncornisation and the idle speed.

All the carbs should begin to open at the same time. If you have dissasembled it to clean them it may no longer be quite right.

You should be idleing at 700 to 750 rpm

A clean plug is not a good sign. No fuel will do it and so will a blown head gasket

Re: Engine dies

I did a compression check, bottom cylinder moving upwards, 95, 93, 35. I pulled the head off and walla! Blown head gasket on the top cylinder. Bought one and installed yesterday. Checked thermostat. It opened at about 150 degrees. Run it in the bayou. Runs like a scalded dog!! :D  :D
