I am have a problem with the primer choke system on my "87" 70 HP Evinrude. If I use the primer choke system(turn the key to on for 10 secs before starting) when trying to start the motor for the 1st start of the day it will not start unless I turn it to manual and pump the ball on the fuel line. It doesn't do this every time, but it is getting more frequent.

Is this common? Do I just go ahead and replace the primer choke solenoid or is there anything else I should look for 1st?

Just a suggestion, When you are in a quiet area or have the boat on the trailer, take off the Motor Hood and turn the key to on ( Not Start) and push the key in and out. Listen to see if you here the selonoid "Clicking" as you do this. You may have someone do this while you listen at the Motor. If nothing happens, then either your selonoid is dead or the wiring to it is messed up!
By the way, you say you "Turn the key on for 10 seconds And Squeeze the bulb". Proper way to start is: Squeeze Bulb until firm, Turn key to on position, Raise Fast Idle lever a bit and "Push the key "IN" and hold, when trying to start. I don't know if you are pushing in on the key, or just turning it to "ON" to prime it or not, from the way you describe your method of starting! You need to push it!

Rick

Re: primer choke ??

To activate the primer choke all I had to do in the past is turn the key to on and press in for about 10 secs and then start. I never had to pump up the bulb before, and it doesn't always fail. If I switch to manual I do know I have to prime with the bulb.

I will see if I can have someone push in the key and listen for the solenoid to click.

I have the Seloc manual for this motor but it is rather vague about trouble shooting this system.

Also, You should always squeeze the Bulb until firm, before the first start of the day, weather you prime it with the key switch or Manually. Fills the lines and carburator bowls up! Also, as djohns19 said, you may want to put a new fuel line and bulb on. Cheapest thing to do first! But try squeezing the bulb until it's firm first, next time you try to start it. It's the method that almost everyone uses. Just part of starting a cold engine!

Rick

Re: primer choke ??

Hey guys thanks for the info, I will give those suggestions a try before I go and change the solenoid. I have done the boating thing before but I had an IO and I know a bit more about the 4 stroke motors than the 2 strokes. :p
