I recently purchased a used 18 foot center console, with a 1989 Evinrude 120 VRO. I was told it had a new power head. The motor after running 4-5 minutes starts short loud audible @1 second intervals. The VRO was removed a few years ago. It has a brand new water pump and has a good flow of water through the pee hole. When on my initial outing it planed out good and as the audible started sounding, the rpm dropped significantly. The motor doesn't feel hot even when the audible is sounding. I reconnected a couple of wires when I bought it, leading into the head.
Faulty Temp. sensor?
Is there a rpm limiter?

Thanks, Dan

Re: 89 evinrude 120 over temp audible?

do you have a manual for your motor? my VRO (140hp Rude) is disconnected, but when i was skimming thru the manual, i believe there are a couple reasons for the buzzer, with explanations for the diff signals.
-low/oil sensor in oil reservoir
-temp sensor on each cyl bank

seems that low oil is 1/2sec every sec, steady buzz on overheat? don't have the manual handy.

maybe i missed something. but the rpm limiter feature was mentioned also... a built-in safety feature when there is a problem.

just a thought...
you'll probably get some replies to verify all this shortly.

Thanks, your audible words are right on the money. I just purchased a manual. It does have a limiter.. Thanks for the thought... Dan
