Anyone know who sells the lower unit extention kit to make a 1991 johnson 40hp a 20" shaft instead of a 15"?

Howdy, LB.

I know of no "kit". I don't think I ever saw a '91 short shaft 40. Are you certain that is what you have? Measure from the underside of the transom clamp (top of the transom) to the "cavitation" plate.

Assuming that you do have a short shaft: The parts needed would have been manufactured by OMC as part of a 20" shaft 40.

The leg, driveshaft, shifting rod, water transfer pipe and maybe a few other miscellaneous parts would assemble to your powerhead just as the other parts came off. When you find the price of the needed parts you might decide to just go buy a long shaft engine.

If you get lucky, you might find a long shaft 40 with a blown powerhead. Just swap the powerheads.

Let us know, and good luck. :)

Thanks JB
It is a short shaft with t&t. The kit I saw used the same lower unit with a spacer in between and used extentions on the internals and included a new part or two.
L B

1991 Johnson 40 short shaft is/was a 20". I could not find any reference to a 15".

Thanks MG
We have had the motor since new(it may be 1993) and nothing has been changed. As strange as it may seem, it measures 15". I have three other boats and motors to compare it to and one is short, two are 20"
L B
