Just purchased my 1st outboard at a garage sale. Johnson Sea Horse 2HP. The serial and model # plate is missing, but when comparing it to photos I think its from the 70's. This had been unused for several years with the gas left in it and was totally gummed up. I have completely dismantled and cleaned the carb, cleaned and lubed the recoil starter, installed new plug. Now runs great, starts on 1st pull, however that's the limit of my knowledge.
2 questions; 1st, what should I do/check about the shaft from the engine to the prop and how do I do it? 2nd, how can I date this motor so I can find a manual? Any help appreciated...Thanks!

Give us the model/serial numbers - and I will help with the production date.

You should cehck the water pump/change the impeller in the water pump.

It's missing, right?
These are the possible mfg years:
1971 2R71
1972 2R72
1973 2R73
1974 2R74
1975 2R75
1976 2R76
1977 2R77
1978 2R78
1979 2R79

Check the link below for a manual.

As it is watercooled a new impeller is #1 as well as the oil in the lower unit.
This is a 1971 Evinrude:
http://mitglied.lycos.de/old_omc/e_1971/seite_18_19.jpg

Sounds like good advice, how do I change the oil? There is a "drain" plug on the bottom of the shaft,in front of the prop. When I remove it it has a brown/gray greese like fluid which I assume is the oil you mention, but I don't see any place to fill it.
How do I get at the impeller to change it? I'm reluctant to start tearing things apart until I know where I'm going>
There is a "soft plug" on the side of the block with the # 2R78P... 4822637. looks like could be a model # and part #? What do you think?
Thanks for the advice and prompt replies.
Arbe 38

Then it is a 1978.
The Evinrude (link to picture) is the same engine, but different colour. Just for reference.

You found the drain and filler plug. There is one above the cavitation plate. Same size and style. IF there is another screw, smaller in size, don't touch it.

Get new outboard gear lube and new washers for the two oil plugs.

Hang the engine somewhere (as on the boat).
Fill from the lower hole.
When it reaches the upper, oil level hole, put the upper plug in. Then take away the lube bottle and put the lower plug in.

To change the impeller you need a manual. I'm not sure about this model. There is no gear or neutral? Maybe it is very easy.

The 2 hp only has one plug for drain/fill - take the plug out drain the oil - fill new oil in tru the same plug.
