Hi I've got a 1971 Johnson 60HP with a suspected bad power pack. First of all can anyone explain to me the purpose of the power pack and can I check its outputs with my VOM. There is no spark to any of the cylinders and I know that pack was replaced by a previous owner. After looing through the forums it seems like alot of Johnsons have problems with power packs. Any advice would be apreciated.

Oh by the way Model# 60ESL-71C Serial# J34496192

Re: 71 Johnson Power Pack

Power pack performs the same function as an automotive CD ignition system; it manages the low voltage ignition circuits to the coil(s). Power packs do occasionally fail, but not with great frequency. I have a 1985 Johnson 140 with over 700 hours and the original power pack, although I bought a spare in the first year. When one fails it definitely is a show stopper. I don't know of a simple test for the power pack, but if you have zero spark, it's generally the pack, stator, or timer base. There are tests for the stator and timer base which are detailed in a shop manual for your motor. Good luck.

Re: 71 Johnson Power Pack

Thanks for the reply "Wilde One", every little bit helps. I'd sure like to test that stator but I have no manual and I was planning on working on it tonight. Anybody have the repair manual for my same Make&Model.
