I recently purchased this motor. THere are two dials Low speed/ high speed and they go from Lean to Rich. I am having a difficult time starting this motor, when I get it running, it sounds really good; however, when I shut it down, it won't start back up again. THese levers were not on when I purchased the motor, they were in a box. I set the posts at bottom max, but have to reposition all of the time. (Take the knob off, turn the post, reposition the lever). Can anyone help me to figure this motor out, hard starting, and rich lean levers.

Hello.
It sounds to me like the high and low speed needles are loose in their housings.
By what you are writing it seems to me that the levers you put on belong to a '59 carburator. You should be able to take the little black levers off, put them right on the needles and use them to turn the needles
Get some packing from a marine store(#43-123)and put them in the housing.
Then after you have set the needles, tighten the slow needle valve nut and the high needle valve nut so the needles don't move around anymore.(not too tight, you will want to do fine tuning)
Good luck.

dougm,Get yourself a ser. manual.Try atNAPA,Amazon.com,ebay or the tab at the top of this page.Turn the mixture screws gently in all the way then turn low speed out 1 1/2 turns, high speed out 3/4 turn.Start and warm motor.Adj.
high speed while at speed then low speed at idle
in gear.
Hard starting is probably do to poor fuel supply. If original twin hose tank it is a pressure tank.Be sure it makes and holds pressure, that hoses, fittings and filters are clean and tight.
It may need a carb. rebuild with attention to
cleaning all jets etc.

supposedly, the carb was rebuilt 2-yrs ago and there was a tune up. It also was supposed to be water ready. I recently replaced impeller, that was successful, and I can get the motor to start (full throttle) as soon as I start to back the throttle off to try adjusting the nedles, it stalls, floods and won't restart. I have a ser. man. on order should be here soon. I do have the orig. mile master can, and there is pressure in can. I had heard that the needles had to be low speed (1 1/2) and High 3/4. When I did this it did start. should I be starting at rich and moving to lean, or the other way around. Am I wasting my time?

Once the needles are set you should not have to move them.Maybe the float in the carb is not right?

Once you get the mixture needles right, you don't touch them again. Use the choke to start cold.
