Will motor prematurely wear out if thermostat is stuck in open pos.?

Okay, I have a 1978 Evinrude 55hp. A guy at a marine place said that since my thermostat is stuck in the open position, and the pressure release valve needs replacing, the motor will prematurely wear out if I don't replace them, is this true. I thought that the more cold water the motor has, the better. Cause it is better to have a cooler motor than one that is overheating.
I am not too sure what the pressure releif valve is, so I will have to check my manual when I get home(wait a min., a pressure relief valve is what is on the thermostat, right?) If the thermostat is like one on a car, it shouldn't be a problem to to replace it, correct?
Any help on these topics would be appreciated. Thanks, Bro Chris

Chris.... The thermostat is a necessity in a outboard engine. The water outside of the cylinder wall must be heated in order to compensate for the distortion that takes place inside the cylinder. Without that heated water, in time, it will result in scored scuffed pistons. Bottom line... the fellow at the marine shop knows what he's talking about.

not only that, your engine will run rich, which means your engine will run rough

Re: Will motor prematurely wear out if thermostat is stuck in open pos.?

Well, today the motor has temperature, not like the other day. The other day it was cool to the touch after running it for 10 min. on the hose. I take it, when it is under load it makes a difference to the temp to the cylinder. So I am guessing maybe the thermostat was not stuck open.
Now, question, should I just change it anyways, or just check it now and again when I am boating and see if it warming to proper temp(150-160)?

Change it !! Or yiou will look like this when it sticks closed and the motor overheats out in the middle of the lake    Most intermitten problems will happen when you least expect it.

I burned a hole in a piston from listening to a dealers mechanic that said I didn't need the tstat. 905 hrs after the tstat was removed the piston had a buildup of carbon and goo which heated and melted the crown. The engine (1981 140hp V4 Johnson which I bought new) was never decarbonized either which made it worse. Decarbonize at least once a year with or without the tstat.

Thanks guys. I guess for the little amount that it costs for a thermostat, I might as well change it. I did take the boat out on the weekend. boy does it work like a charm!!!
