I have a 1965 Evinrude 40 Hp, problem it wont go/stay in forward, revearse is ok. My Daddy said it sounds like the shift dog is in backward, but I thought before I tried tearing this thing apart I would look for other suggestions. It will go in forward at low idle, but as you give it the gas it pops out; you can hear the gears chattering but it just wont stay in. You cant even hold it in gear by hand. Thanks for any help. :(

It has a control cable, but I did take the cable off and tried to put it in gear at the motor without the cable (thought maybe the cable needed adjusting) but it still done the same thing.

Re: wont go in gear

Looks like at least a clutch dog and/or forward gear. Some OMC motors can have fwd and rev gears reversed, so yopu may be able to avoid the gear set.
